"Why don't you want to go out tonight?"
"It's just an exam. You have the final to make up for it."
"I'm just here to have a good time."
Throughout my college career, I have come across these statements on several different occasions. In college, we come across a variety of people. We come across the people that seem to be studying 24-7. We come across the people that do well in college, but are still able to still have a social life. We also come across those who are only in college for one reason.
Partying.
To those who believe that college is solely for "good times," this is for you.
I am going to be completely honest. I am not the perfect student. I have missed class before. I have done poorly on a test because I chose to attend a social event the night before. I have not done a homework assignment because I chose to take a nap instead. The difference between me and you is that I still strive to make the MOST of the opportunity that I am given. Education is not something that is just given to you. It is an opportunity. Only 7% of the world holds a college-degree. In college, you're allowed to have fun, but that doesn't mean the fun has to take over your entire college career.
I can not wrap my mind around why young adults waste thousands upon thousands of dollars to barely pass a class because "D's get degrees, too." Yes, it will get you a degree, but will it allow you to stand out upon the other thousands of college students who have a better resume? You cannot go back in time and try to do better on those exams that you didn't study for. Life goes on. It will not wait for you.
There are people in third-world countries that go to bed praying every night that they would be able to attend a university someday, maybe even any type of school. We are given a chance to make a name for ourselves. I try my best because I want to look back someday and feel regretful for my degree that was achieved by little to no work. I try my best because I have a disabled sister that will never get the opportunity to go to college.
I'm sorry, but you cannot put "expert at shotgunning beers" on your resume. My advice to you is that if you learn to take your education seriously, you will see a change. Doors will be opened. Believe it or not, but you can balance a social life and schoolwork. Trust me, it's possible. I promise.
