Dear those who burned the flag,
I understand you are upset that Donald Trump won the 2016 Presidential Election but here's the thing: one way or the other, people voted for him. There was no rigging or anything, he won. So explain to me why you think it's okay to take the American Flag and burn it. I would actually love to hear why. Is it just because you're upset about the outcome? I'm sorry to tell you, but that's not good enough. In fact, no reason is ever good enough to take something that was fought for and burn it. That flag has history, it was fought for by some of my family and for you to take it and to set fire to it is like saying "f*** you America, and everyone in it". How dare you take your anger out on something that has no affect on what you're upset about. You had your moment, I think it's time to move on and just get used to the fact that our president is Donald Trump.
Now, I might be a Republican, and I might just be PMSing but I'm not the only one with this opinion, I'm just someone who's not afraid to share it. I know some of you won't want to hear it, but this is not an article about politics. This is an article about how you're being disrespectful to the country you're living in and how you are abusing your rights. Take a minute to think about that. Take a minute to think about how someone's defending that flag right now. Think about how someone like me who has two veteran grandpas, a veteran dad, a friend in the infantry and a brother thinking about military service. Think about how someone like me feels when you take what her family has defended and burn it.
The thing that bothers me most is that the first people I heard were doing this were people in my own hometown, people who are just in high school. The people who are young enough to have just started driving are taking my country's flag and burning it, probably not even knowing the consequences of what they were doing. Taking the flag and burning it is a disgrace to yourselves. Sure, you might think you are doing something that is worth your time, you might even think that it was fun, but that kind of fun has some consequences. Consequences like people sharing your story on Facebook and talking about it. People get angry about this and the idea that you still don't understand that is slightly scary. There are things that I still don't understand, However, I understand that if I were to, oh, I don't know, burn the American flag, that would make some people upset. So before you decide what "fun" thing you are going to do tonight, think about how it might make someone else feel. Also, before you decide that you want to be upset about something like the election, think about how you can actually make a difference because if I am being honest, burning the American Flag does not do a thing to change who the president is. Take a deep breath and think rationally next time.
Till next time,
Megs
