Here's to us.
To the ones who don't usually have a say, the ones who are always willing to help others, the ones who usually can't express how they feel when something goes wrong. and the ones who can't find the way to make themselves known, this is for you. I am one of you, and I know it's not easy being overlooked.
For some, it might be because you're the middle or younger child who is always being compared to your older sibling. For others, it could be the fact that you have so much potential and so much to give, but you aren't given the chance.
You want to make a point, you want to stand out, and sometimes, there is going to be someone or something getting in the way of you having your chance to shine. It sucks. It's not fair and it gets tiring. You always wonder, "When can I have my chance to speak? When will my time come?" Let me tell you something, it will come; It may be a while, but it will come.
I had a rude awakening when I got to college and tried out for my first college show — I didn't get cast. It threw me for a loop since I had been cast in shows in high school. I tried again in the spring and I had a great audition, but I wasn't cast due to schedule issues. After that, I never bothered auditioning. I was afraid of being overlooked and not casted at all. In fact, I embraced the fact that I'd get rejected so I wouldn't be upset.
However, that changed. I got cast in my first show and it was a lot of fun. I learned so much, but I missed two years of experience due to my fear of being overlooked. What I'm trying to tell you is, don't let this take over your life.
If you want to do something, do it. If you want to make a statement, do it. Only you have the power of not being overlooked. You can be something, as cliche as that sounds, but it's true. Take control of your life and make something happen.
