To Those That Only Show The Tip Of The Iceberg

Let people see more than that 10 percent.

I was once told that our lives are like an iceberg and 90 percent of the iceberg remains underwater for no one to see. The other 10 percent is what people encounter when they meet you or become an acquaintance with you. The people closest to you still only see about 30 to 50 percent of you.

The other 50 percent are things like your secrets and things that you don't really tell everyone that you meet. There are so many more layers underneath that deserve to be brought out from under the water.

Everyone keeps a part of themselves hidden for reasons that make perfect sense to them. Maybe they are afraid of getting hurt or maybe it is something they do not want to think about.

I know that certain parts of the iceberg can stay tucked away forever; I am not saying that everyone in the world needs to know your deepest secrets or that your pants fell down on your first day of second grade. Those are things that define you, that not everyone needs to know about.

There are only parts of you that some people know about. Your best friend probably knows when you're sad even if you are not saying anything. Your parents probably know when you are struggling. Your brother probably knows when he's annoying you. Your significant other probably knows what your favorite activities are.

The iceberg that you are, is your entire brain and heart. It is what makes your heart beat and keeps you on track.

It is okay to let people see more than that 10 percent. It is important to let people in because if they did not know things about you, how could they truly love who you are.

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
