To Those Stressing Over Finals Week, Just Know God Still Has Our Back

Hopefully things work in our favor, but if now, it's still going to be ok.

To Those Stressing Over Finals Week, Just Know God Still Has Our Back

Finals week has arrived. With finals week comes a lot of pressure - pressure to succeed. Some of us are going to be really pleased with the results of our performance this week, and others and going to be a bit upset. Last year, I was so caught up in the "what ifs" during finals.

"What if I don't do well on this exam?"

"What if I have a B in this class?"

"What if I'm not going to be a doctor?"

"What if I'm not on the track I'm supposed to be?"

What if, what if, what if....

I realized that kind of thinking is toxic for me. Instead of building myself up for finals, I was allowing my head to be filled with negativity. Whatever questions you are asking yourself, or doubts you are having, take heart in knowing that no matter what happens, life goes on after finals week. In the long run, everything is going to be okay - all you can do is your best this week. My favorite thing to tell myself is "But if not, all will be well, for He is good."

It comes from the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego in Daniel 3. These three refused to bow down to King Nebuchadnezzer, who reigned over Babylon at the time.

The King was furious that they did not worship his gods or idols, so he had them summoned before him, and he told them that they were going to be thrown into a fire. In verses 17-18 they told the king, "If it be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of thine hand, O king. But if not, be it known, O king, that we will not serve your gods, nor worship the golden image which you have set up."

This is such a cool reminder to me, that God is constantly in control. God did save Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego from the flames, but the point is that even if He had not, they still had so much faith in the Lord. "But if not, we will not serve your gods." What a statement.

So maybe you are like me, and praying for an A in a certain class. I really hope it happens for us both, but if not, it is all going to be okay. Or maybe you are facing trials going into the holidays, and you are wishing for them to be resolved. It will be wonderful if things do get smoothed over, but if not, take comfort that you have a Savior who loves you more than you could ever imagine. It gets so easy to lose focus on what is really important - I do it all the time - but He is greater than all of our worldly trials and tribulations.

With that being said, take care of yourself this week. Actually sleep a bit, treat yourself to a bubble bath, go for a walk, let your mind have little breaks, and replace the coffee with some water every now and then. We are going to make it through finals week, and no matter what happens, He is greater than it all.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
