To Those Against Stricter Gun Laws

You don't even know what you're arguing against.

You see that statistic constantly: there have been more mass shootings in the United States this year than there have been days. The United States has the highest number of gun-related deaths each year. Students are being taught how to hide from a gunman beginning in elementary school. And yet, there is no ability given to anyone to strengthen gun laws.

And this, quite frankly, is tiring. It’s exhausting. You who are against stricter gun laws, you fight and you fight and you fight, and you win and you win and you win, again and again. And you celebrate and ignore the stories of so many people who have lost loved ones, of victims whose murderers were able to purchase a gun at a road-side show, or an auction, or whose background check took too long and they were able to get a gun, despite not being of sound mental health. You are making your signs advocating your stance using the blood and bones of all of those that have been shot by people who should not be allowed to carry the same weapons for which you are arguing.

And your arguments are losing their strength, their meaning. Because right now, you are arguing for materials over human life, and there is not a more ignorant or selfish argument out there.

You can say that making gun laws stricter won’t stop all gun violence, but you know what it will do? It will cut down on the number of teenagers being buried because they went to school. It will cut down on the number of parents who were killed because they wanted to go to the mall. It will cut down on the number of couples who were just looking for birth control. It wouldn’t be just a single person. It would be hundreds of people.High schoolers, mothers, fathers, sisters, uncles…

You say that it would be a violation of the second amendment. And yet the right to life seems to be looked over. And the right to pursue happiness is pretty damn hard to enforce when it’s impossible to feel safe. Because how can one feel safe when they wake up in the morning and read of another mass shooting? Or walk to school and see another flag at half mast?

The worst part is that you are not even understanding the goal correctly. This is not asking for a ban of guns. This is asking for stricter laws. And yet you continue to fight background checks. You continue to fight for your right to sell a gun to any old Joe that stops by. You throw out that if we didn’t have guns, we’d have knives, ignoring the fact that most people, myself included, would rather be held a knife-point than gunpoint.

And this is what makes it so tiring. Because you’re just not listening. Stricter gun laws do not have to mean a loss of guns. But keeping gun laws the way they are has to and will mean a loss of life.

The point is not to limit you. Get that out of your selfish mind. The point is to save others. The point is to keep people from being murdered, from being massacred. The point is to help them, not to hinder you.

Besides, stricter guns laws wouldn’t hurt anyone of sound mind who wanted to purchase a gun. And so you wouldn’t have anything to worry about, right?

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.
