There are people who are happy-go-lucky that don't worry about anything. Some people are carefree and go with the flow. But I am not one of those people, and I wish I was. I am a worrier. I stress about things the second my eyes open in the morning until I actually fall asleep. And I know there are people like me out there, so here is an open letter that I hope makes you stop.
For us twenty-something-year-olds, we have tons to worry about. A lot of us are finishing up school and are in our most stressful semesters. Are we going to graduate? Are we going to finish this assignment on time? Or do good enough on this assignment to pass this last general education class? Are we going to pass our final tests to get our certifications? May cannot come fast enough. And for those of us that aren't in school, we are working our butts off. Do I have enough hours this week? What else do I have to pay for? How am I gonna pay for that? Am I going to be able to afford crackers and chips or just one? There are so many things going through our heads. There are so many things we worry about. There are so many things we stress about. But let me tell you something: relax.
We all need to relax. To be honest, I think we forgot how to. Take an hour to watch your favorite television show and just sit down. Go for a run or go to the gym. Go out to dinner with a friend and catch up. Take a nap. Read a chapter in a book for fun. Go to a movie. Just sit down and tell hilarious stories with your friends.
Another thing we need to do is breathe. Take a deep breath. Count to ten. Slow down! I know a lot of things need to be in a hurry, but don't rush so much. Everything will work out, whether you do it in five minutes or two days. Enjoy it and put the best effort you can! The check off on the list doesn't matter if it's done effortlessly.
I know you are missing when we were seventeen and our only worries were either practice or a game, waiting for school to let out on Friday, and who's house you were going to on Saturday night. I know you are missing the sweet days of no bills and no homework. I know you miss your skinny days. I know you miss having nothing to worry and stress about. I know you miss the simpler days.
Be thankful for all of the things we get to experience at such a young age. We still have our lives ahead of us, and do you really want to spend it all worrying and stressing? Of course not. Also, remember that all of this hard work will pay off. You will graduate and get that degree. You will pay your bills on time. And you will be just fine. It will all work out.
Remember to take care of yourself. You need to eat good food, not all junk. You need to drink more water than alcohol. You need to exercise. It can be twenty minutes of yoga and meditation, or it can be a thirty minute hard core cardio work out at the gym. Either way, do something physical. Always call your parents and siblings. Let them know that you're okay. Those phone calls usually lead to vent sessions, which always makes you feel better.
One more thing: you can do this. Talk about it. Pray about it. Cry about it. Whatever you need to do, do it. You will make it and you will be successful. Just smile. You will be so proud of yourself when all of it is said and done. And I will be proud of you, too.
