The Town That Built Me: Lafayette, Tennessee

This is where I was shaped into the person I am today.

Here's to the small town that built me. I will be forever grateful to my parents for moving us out to Lafayette, Tennessee all those years ago. I met some of the best possible people growing up here. It's one of those towns where everyone literally knows everyone. If Suzy and Dave broke up everyone knew within minutes and we all knew exactly who had beef with who. Everyone remembers every little detail about everyone because who knows when it's going to come in handy. It's a town where you're known by your older siblings and you can't get out of their shadows even if you try. This is the town that built me. Tiny Lafayette, with our Walmart, 7 gas stations, and tons of fast food. Lafayette, where the only real places to hang out are Sonic and Piggly Wiggly parking lot. Lafayette, where you're history teachers were almost always coaches of some kind and where the football players are Gods, even the shitty ones. Lafayette taught me so many things. My manners and my temper. I got taught my love of football here. This is where I fell in love with running as a sport. This is where I didn't exactly fit in, even with my older brother's reputation. This is where I wasn't picked on but I also wasn't dating material and both of those were because everyone knew my dad and brother. This is where I tested the elasticity of the rules and realized that they didn't bend nearly as much as I thought they would. This is where I've spent the majority of my life. This is where I grew up. This is where I would take walks out back of Grandma and Grandpa's property. This is where I learned that death will come for the people you love, even if you aren't ready for it. This is where I caught my first lightening bug. Where I learned to say please and thank you. This is where I learned to take care of living things. This is where I learned that I didn't fit in to a mold that so many fit into. This is where I learned that church wasn't really for me. This is where I discovered fierce loyalty. This is where so many of my memories lie. This is where I met some of the best people and did the dumbest things, all for the sake of being able to say "I did it". This is where I was shaped into the person I am today. This is where I learned so much in so little time. I am twenty years old and in college that is hour and a little bit away from home. I am a college student, and this is my nod to the town that built me. You have taught me so very much in my life, and you will always be home to me.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
