Dear friend,
You're hurting. I'm sorry. In a world where being less than happy is practically a sin, you're stuck hiding behind a façade of smiles and "I'm ok." Sometimes, every day can be a struggle. But allow me to encourage you with some truths for these dark times.
You're not alone.
Surprise! Everybody is fighting a battle of one kind or another. While some people are genuinely enjoying the season of life that they are in, most human beings are going to war daily with something. Do not let an outwardly happy appearance fool you. Anyone could be bearing a burden that is greater than they can carry. When you come to this realization, allow yourself to be moved by the hurting hearts all around you and love other people. Invite someone to coffee for the sake of genuine conversation. And offer hugs whenever possible.
You are a priceless treasure.
People end their lives, many times, because they have forgotten their value. Well, allow me to be the one to remind you of just how precious you are. And this worth bestowed upon you is entirely independent of people's opinions, past mistakes and the number on the scale. One man said, "Wow. Look at this masterpiece I have created. I could never bear to be separated from (insert name). So I am going to die for my beloved, so we never ever have to be apart." That is a paraphrase of Jesus' thoughts about you. Rest in His love for you and your struggle with self-worth will gradually melt away.
You have been called to a set-apart life.
The thing about the set-apart life is that it is often a lonely life. If you are not a believer, you will blend in with the world. But the truth is, whether you are a Christian or not, you were not created for this world. We were made for eternity and the new heaven and earth. So, if you find yourself feeling lonely and out of place or wondering why so much brokenness exists here, take heart in the knowledge that your true home is with Jesus. When you belong to the world, the life you are called to will not matter to you. But if you are a Christian, prepare to look strange to other people and to even be persecuted. You are traveling on rough terrain. The kingdom of darkness is seeking you out. So seek out others who love the Lord to help you bear the journey down the narrow road.
Don't be surprised.
The apostle Peter says in 1 Peter 4:12, "Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you."
Struggles in this life are to be expected. Because of this, coming alongside one another is all the more necessary. If we are not being persecuted, facing temptations, or suffering for the sake of righteousness, then we are being hit with the realities of our fallen world. Keep that in mind next time you ask a fellow believer how they are doing.
The reality is that life is hard. People die everyday, physical and mental illnesses afflict many and abuse runs rampant. Despite all these things, we must remember we are not alone. Even if someone has not experienced exactly what you have been through, they have experienced something similar and can offer support. The devil would love nothing more than to isolate you from those who can speak hope and healing into your life. So do not let him hold you in silent captivity away from a community of caring people who can help you.
Remember also that when you are facing anything, the call of Jesus on your life is so much greater than the life your fear is calling you to. Or your depression. Or your shame. Or your anger. Or this world. The way He sees you and beckons your heart to come holds the power to soothe your aching soul. But you have to allow the King to enter and place your burdens at His feet if you want to be set free. Following Jesus will not empty your life of pain or hardships, but it will save you and embed an irreplaceable hope where darkness once grew.
So, dear struggling heart, live the life to which you are called.
