Hello my dear!

So: another Valentine's Day is on the horizon, and as of right now, you don't have a significant other to spend it with, but it seems like everyone else around you does.

It sucks! Trust me: I know; I'm in the same boat. However, I'm kind of happy that I won't be spending my Valentine's Day attached.

Not being with a significant other on Valentine's Day is a gift in a way! It means that you don't have to worry about the pressures of planning out the perfect date, the perfect outfit, or feel the insurmountable pressure that people who end up going on dates.

You get to be you, and that is an amazing thing to be!

I don't know much about love or being in love, granted, but I feel like Valentine's Day can sometimes force people to do crazy things, and it's not just because they are in love.

They do these crazy things because it's what we're taught to do.

We're taught that on Valentine's Day, you show each other you love each other with fancy dinners, flowers, and candy.

I feel like we're never taught how much small gestures on such a stressful day can actually mean. For example: if your significant other does the dishes or makes the coffee in the morning instead of you having to, something that simple could mean so much more than some fancy restaurant where you have to dress fancy and you will probably feel uncomfortable.

Like I said before: I don't know much about love, but I firmly believe that having a day where you can celebrate being you, the awesome individual that I know you are, on your own and you can do whatever you want is honestly the most amazing thing in the world.

One of the things we talk about a lot in my social work classes at school is self-care. This is the idea that when you take care of clients, you also need to care for yourself. So this Valentine's Day, why not treat yourself to a nice day out? Go get yourself a new book to read, or go get your nails or hair done, or just go to the nearest store and buy yourself some chocolate!

You may not be attached this Valentine's Day, my dear, but your day will come.

Right now though? You have to be patient. Take this time to focus on you, and treat yourself the way you deserve to be treated.

Love yourself this Valentine's Day, and enjoy that chocolate!

Sincerely,

The girl learning to love herself <3

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
