I am a dreamer. I like to constantly dream about the future instead of the present. Our society tends to focus on the future which impacts us all to a certain degree. Some are more suceptible than others... like me. We are constantly asked, "What are you going to be in the future?" "What school did you apply to?" "What's the plan after college?" "When would you liked to be married? Kids? How many?" If I had a quarter for each time I have been asked about the future, I would be rich. It would be even better if I had a quarter for each time I have been asked about the future and quickly said an answer without really knowing. As a college student, we are particularly asked these questions as we rush fraternities and sororities, meet different people, get interviewed for jobs and apply for graduate schools.
It is hard to live in the present in a world that lives in the future. When your dreams are dictated by the future, you are entering dangerous territory.
This isn't an article to scare you. But to reassure you, the negative effects of living in the future can be reverted... simply. You must live in the present. Easy said than done. However, you need to strive toward making your present self happy.
Now, you are probably wondering. Why? What's the benefit? How will this help me? And even perhaps, how will this help me in the future?
You aren't going to like this answer. First, stop worrying. Stressing over the details in life complicates the simple. Worry blocks us from true enjoyment and savoring the flavor of the moment. Don't worry about capturing a perfect Instagram or Snapchatting to share with the whole world. Think about yourself in the moment and whether doing something or going to an event makes you happy.
Next, surround yourself with friends and family. I don't know about you, but there's nothing better than quality time with those who love you. I find myself constantly stressed out about my next exam or quiz. An immediate remedy is talking to those who support your every decision. Making time for your friends and family should be your priority. They are a guaranteed aspect of your future and keeping them close will help you accomplish your goals.
Travel to discover yourself and bring out the adventure in you that is dying to come out. We often times say, "Oh, I will go to _______ when I have the opportunity later in life." How do you know the opportunity will come later in life? I am not suggesting you spend all your money on an expensive trip, but there are places around you that are waiting to be explored. Create a memory right now through going somewhere you have never been to and don't know anything about.
While you are at it, listen to a popular song right now. In the future, you will regret not blasting a current hit with your car windows rolled down and singing to the top of your lungs.
Lastly, take time to pray or meditate. My biggest regret is not reflecting or praying about my week and how blessed I am. Thinking about the future and worrying so much can drain the bright side of your week. I am blessed to finally come to this realization through prayer. I am just as guilty as you. It is hard to just let go and realize you are not in control of the future. No matter how hard you think about it, no matter how hard you try to manipulate what happens to you, life will throw you a curve ball. Dream about the future, but don't let it dictate you. Know that you will indirectly be working on the future, by working on your happiness today.
