My suggestions on where to visit in Alabama for the uninformed and the curious.

I've lived in Alabama my entire life, but there are still places and things I never knew about this state shown to me every day.

That being said, for the out-of-state student who hasn't given this fair state a chance, I have a few places you can start your exploring (and hopefully appreciation building).

My first recommendation will always be to visit our beaches. My favorite beaches are in Gulf Shores, where you can spend the day on white sand beaches and then go to one of my favorite places in the world: The Hangout. This is the place where my love of live music began, and my obsession with The Velcro Pygmies bloomed.

Another beach I recommend visiting, partly because I have sweet childhood memories there, is the beaches at Dauphin Island. This area is a lot quieter, and secluded from a lot of the real tourist trap stuff. You get an authentic beach experience here, as well as a visit to a sulfur pit or two, if you're into that kind of stuff. The Dauphin Island Sea Lab is one of the coolest places to visit, if you're in the mood to learn a little when you're on your vacation, but it's where I first tried calamari from the squid I'd just dissected, so I guess that's pretty cool.

If you haven't made time to make it to any of our bigger cities, like Birmingham or Montgomery, make time to go! If you're from a big city, I understand that there's little excitement in this. Our big cities make "real" big cities laugh. But what's unique about our cities is the history behind them. Did you know Martin Luther King Jr. lead a march around Birmingham? And that that march intensified the entire civil rights movement? This city was a huge part of our country's progression. Birmingham's also famous for this really cool sign, so make sure you get an Instagram pic to post with it! And while you're in our bigger cities, stop in local stores and coffee shops. You never know what could surprise you.

Finally, I have to make a case for my hometown, Huntsville. We have more than a big rocket. There's outdoor malls, and beautiful scenery every where. And for any engineering majors out there, Huntsville is HUGE for your field. Huntsville offers many unique experiences. My favorite tex-mex restaurant, Little Rosie's, is situated in downtown Huntsville, as well as the Huntsville Museum of Art, which offers a seasonal outdoor ice skating rink (*hint hint* it's very romantic). The spot I always visit on my trips home though is Lowe Mill. Where else are you going to find a factory turned art and culture hot spot? I stop and get my tea at Piper & Leaf, then walk around checking out all of the cool things artist have made while I was gone. And did I mention they have outdoor concerts? Awesome, right?

So there's my not-so extensive list of places you should go... I could go on, but I think what I love most is the fact that I discovered many of these places just by exploring where I was living. So you should too. Take a weekend road trip, out-of-state student, and enjoy.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

Creating your schedule for the upcoming semester can be an exciting process. You have the control to decide if you want to have class two-days a week or five-days a week. You get to check things off of your requirement checklist. It's an opportunity for a fresh start with new classes (which you tell yourself you'll never skip.) This process, which always starts out so optimistic, can get frustrating really quickly. Here are 25 thoughts you have when registering for classes.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
