To The Ones That Will Never Leave Me

Best friends are something you totally didn't expect to happen but are happy that they did.

I remember the first time that we meant.

It was senior year of highschool and you two were the cheerleading captains. As the new girl in school I was determined to make at least some new friends. A girl on your team ended up being one of my childhood friends and talked me into joining the squad. After some deliberating I ended up coming to practice. When I was being introduced to everyone I was so freaking nervous. That was until I ended up striking up a conversation with you guys and it was at that moment I knew.

That you guys were gonna be my tribe.

Now after almost four years together I don’t know which is tighter our jeans or our friendship. We are now no longer those eighteen-year olds who thought that dying our own hair was a good idea. We are now sophomores and juniors in college and with finals coming up I thought it would be cool to take a moment to thank you each for the following.

  1. The Food

Either when I was too broke or sick you guys always came through with my favorite meals.

2. The Movie Nights

At this time in our lives it is easy to admit that we have watched Mean Girls so many times that we can recite the entire movie while sharing a huge thing of pizza.

3. Teaching Me How To Adult

Honestly if it had not been for you guys I would still have zero idea on how to even balance a checkbook.

4. Fashion Advice

From my first date with a boy to my first interview for a college job you guys have always helped me pick out outfits. It could have been one or two hours of shopping at the mall but you guys stayed with me and helped me slay.

5. Boys

This goes without saying you guys have experienced the best and the worst boys that have come through my life. When I was heartbroken you guys were quick with the best petty comments and ice cream. To each I will always be thankful.

6. Laughter

Every time we are together there are tears in my eyes and my sides hurt because whatever just happened it was hilarious. Knowing us it was probably from one of us being klutzy and tripping over something.

7. Rant Sessions

Whenever I just need to get things off of my chest you guys are always there to listen. After which we all agree that whatever or whoever happened was stupid and we all just yell.

8. Loving Me

You guys have accepted me even knowing that I can be out of this world with random theories. So thank you guys loving me even when there were moments where you probably questioned your sanity.

I am so happy to have meant you weirdos and even happier that we ended up going to the same school. So even though finals are horrible and each of us want to go home at the end it will be worth it!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
