To My Sister When I Can't Protect Her

Because I can't always be there with you.

I love you. You will always be my sister and I will always be on your side. But there are times that I can’t always be there, like when you’re in class or out with your friends or at a different school, but I wish I was. Because when I hear of fights you’ve had with the mean girls at school or teachers that you don’t get along with, I wish I could be there to drop kick them right then and there.

If you’re hurt, I want you to remember a time that we laughed together. Or a time that I got in trouble and you didn’t even though we were both doing it, because I laugh whenever I think about it the other way.

If you’re sad, I want you to think of the memory that you would think of if you were about to fight a dementor. Think of a memory that makes you so happy that you feel your chest get warm, because there’s no dementor out there that you can’t beat.

When you feel troubled, I want you to think of a time you watched me struggle but saw me get through it. Because I’m you’re big sister and that’s what I’m supposed to do: get through anything.

I don’t want you to be caught up in the trivial things that I see a lot of other girls get caught up in. The crying, the yelling, the disappointment. I haven’t been through everything, but I’ve been through more than you and I want you to make sure you know your worth. No boy is worth a tear; no absentminded girl is worth being your friend.

Don’t build a wall around yourself, and don’t believe everyone worth your time needs to break down that wall.

Be open to new things and be open to change. The more you open yourself up, the less likely something is going to get trapped inside and hurt you later down the road. The worst thing you can do is hold a grudge.

Having to sit back and watch you struggle, even if we talk on the phone, not being able to physically be there with you is one of the hardest things a sister has to do.

A quote to always live by and to never forget, told by a very great man is: "Even in the darkest of times, one only has to remember to turn on the light." Albus Dumbledore was never wrong when giving some really great advice. But I wholeheartedly believe that there is always a silver lining in something, always another side to a situation. While you may seem so far from accomplishment there is always something you can get out of failure, something to gain from loss.

Never forget that I will do anything for you and that you can always accomplish great things on your own with patience and time.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
