Senior year goes by fast...

Dear MHS high school senior,

High school itself is full of adventure, but sooner or later it is going to come to an end. It's important to live your senior year to the fullest. There are only four years of it, so make it memorable. Take every opportunity to do something while you can! Here are some fun things senior year brings for you!

1. Powderpuff Football

Finally, a chance to pound on the junior class in friendly competition (or not so friendly). The girls get the chance to play in the field while the boys either coach, sit in the stands, or even cheer on the players on the track as cheerleaders. It's a great way to get to know more of your classmates that you usually don't associate with in the halls or classes.

2. Senior Prom

Prom is fun junior year, but senior year is when it counts, only if you make it count! Take chances, buy the dress of your dreams, ask that girl that you have been crushing on since sophomore year, pitch in money for the limo, do anything and everything you can to make sure this last prom is memorable. Just be safe about it!

3. Senior Work Day

Some of our awesome teachers give us the opportunity to give back to the community and clean up our great town! We get to paint, clean, and build on our childhood playgrounds! Due to budget cuts for maintaining these parks, it is important that we get as many people to participate in this activity as possible. Plus, you get to miss school for the day and eat free pizza; it's worth it, trust me! Without getting in trouble by anyone, we can also use each other as canvases and the teachers don't care!

4. Join a Sport (If You Haven't Already)

Sports are a must in our small town and we are pretty good at them, too. It's easy to make friends when you are doing something you love at the same time. Some people don't find their passions until they learn to try new things, so go on and join track in the spring, or be the mascot!

5. Try New Things

Doing things that are a little out of your comfort zone makes senior year even more fascinating! There are so many different volunteer opportunities around our county, it's hard to not find one. Volunteer at the local Humane Society or coach for a Little League team or Special Olympics team. You won't regret it!

6. Homecoming

Whether you are on the field, cheering on the sidelines, on court, in the stands, in the band, or just attending the dance, homecoming is such a great last memory for senior year! Our community comes together for the parade and the pep rally; it's a blast to be a part of!

7. Deciding on a College

It's important that you have already been looking for colleges and applying to them this summer. Do some tours, apply anywhere and everywhere! Also apply for scholarships; college is one of the most expensive things I have ever encountered.

8. Senior Party

The final "farewell" before graduation. At the senior party we get our yearbooks, eat food our parents volunteered to make, get our yard signs, and the fun part is the lantern release.

9. Graduation

Whether you're in the first row, or the last, all that is important is to know that you did it! You survived MHS and all of its obstacles that it has thrown at you. It's bittersweet, but it's a wonderful feeling to know that you have walked through those doors for the last time. The locker that was yours for four years is no longer yours, but the upcoming freshman class's. You throw your cap and then bamyou're done, and it's time to celebrate.

One thing to always remember is that there is a new beginning ahead of you. Don't wallow in what you could have done in high school. Yes, it's four years of your life that you will never get back, but it's only four years. Do all that you can to make it memorable though because those years go by fast, and before you know it you'll be in college, on your own, buying your own groceries.

Senior year, make it memorable. Make it the best last year of your high school career!

Good luck,

A Mason Alumni, Class of 2015

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.
