Having a learning disability myself, I completely understand that little girl struggling with reading the chapter book in her second grade class. This letter is to the little girl with a learning disability, in other words, a letter to a younger me.
To the Little Girl with a Learning Disability,
Hi there! It's me, your grown-up self. Many years ago, I was in just the position you were. I was in school trying to figure out what the last paragraph in the book meant. Yep, I had to read it over and over like you just did. You probably feel ashamed of yourself for not understanding a lot of things in school and don't want to ask any questions. Believe me, I get it. I was in your position years ago. You're going to move onto third, fourth, and fifth grade before you know it. I know that you're asking yourself if you're going to pass. And that answer is yes. You have the family support and smarts you need to make it through your years in school. You've got this.
You're in middle school now. Math is getting harder and so is reading. But guess what? You have the best teachers to help you do the best of your ability on your work. Yes, it is going to take you longer to take the test than anyone else. Yes, in many cases, you'll leave the room to take that test; don't be embarrassed. Finally, it is time for band...something fun! You're so talented by being able to play the saxophone; way to go middle school self! See, not everything is so hard!
Oh high school, health may be easy, but there seems to be no end to algebra. Remember, you have the school and family support you need to get through these four years. Yep, you're probably still leaving economics to take the test, and that's OK. You got a B! Way to go, girl! Jeez, high school just seems to drag on, doesn't it? Just remember, in four short years, it will be time to graduate, and you'll make it to college.
Graduation! You made it! You're walking across that stage and you get your high school diploma! Wait, what is that around your neck? Is that a gold stole ? Heck yeah it is! All of your work paid off!
FINALLY! It's time for college. A time you may have never seen coming. School is still tough, believe me...I'm living it now. But you want to know something? You made it. You made it to college. You did it. You are in one of the best schools that even happens to be close to home. You have tons of friends. You are the Student Body President, believe it or not! You sure do have a lot going for you! And yes, you do still play saxophone.
I wish I could tell you more, but I, myself, are unsure of what else awaits. If you would ask me though, I see a pretty bright future for you.
Congratulations to you. Don't let that learning disability get to you, because I can tell you something, it will never stop you from reaching your dreams.
Sincerely,
Your Future Self
