I remember when I was in high school, I was among those who just could not wait to graduate. I was too concerned about my grades that I had less fun than I could have. Although it is good that I was concerned about my grades, there is a saying, “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy” so, to all my high school seniors, don't be in haste to graduate but rather, interact with your teachers more, make all the friends you can. When there is a “senior ditch class day” participate. You would later reflect on what you did and laugh. Below are reasons why you may hope the second semester of your senior year never ends.
1. You may miss the high school experience.
Students tend to miss the things they used to do in high school such as free food, free printing and free textbooks. You may not value the free textbooks you have in high school but once you graduate and realize you have to do all these things with you or your parents’ money, you begin to appreciate high school more.
2. You may wish you were taking the same classes all year long.
I used to be apart of the people who would be fed up with taking the same classes for all nine months we would be in a particular school year. However, as boring as it sounds, you get to realize after you graduate that it was better that way. In college, you have a limited time to study for a course you may know nothing about. The prolonged courses in high school helps you understand in depth what may be thought in college because here, the professor has to move fast so she covers the topics needed for the next level that you take for that course.
3. Taking advantage of all the free stuff in high school.
There are trips to places like movie theaters, visits to Colleges/Universities, the zoo, the museum, amongst others. All these things, at least for my school was FREE! I now regret not going to as many as I could. Don't be like me. If you have nothing important to do in school, go on field trips with the school because it ends once you graduate. In college, you have to pay to experience such things.
4. Making as many connections as you can.
High school teachers have a lot to offer their students. They get to stay with the students most of the time (if you are a regular school goer) since you spend 7- 8 hours in school on weekdays for several months. Get to know your teachers! They may help you especially with advice on your college choice and tell you how college is like. I remember when I was in school, I had my nickname as my email username. Due to the casual relationship I had with my teachers, they advised me on why it is important to keep everything about you professional especially as I was using that email for some of my applications.
In all, I would say, you only go to high school once so make the best out of it and you would be glad you did.
