To THE Group Chat

Long live the Holy Grail of group chats.

To THE Group Chat
Kamila Marek

As a college student with a mix of home friends, school friends, and work friends, I have been in many, many group chats. Some have been a one-shot type of deal, used only for that one beach trip or for the people going to Six Flags. Some have been going on for months and go off almost daily. A lot of them are annoying and go off at the most inconvenient times. I turned the notifications off for a few, and I've even left a couple (sorry). However, among this endless pit of messages, there lies the crown jewel: the group chat.

This group chat has managed to exceed all of the others for a wide variety of reasons. For one, it's always active, but not in an obnoxious way where you don't want to contribute to the conversation. The people in it are all people I can genuinely tolerate and don't want to punch in the face. There's never drama in it that isn't ours, but you can guarantee if there's drama between one of us and an outsider, someone's getting roasted. The topic of conversation is always relevant and I never feel like I have nothing to say. Basically, this group chat is the Holy Grail.

What I wanted to say to the people in the group chat is thank you. Thanks for making me laugh out loud in public places, making people look at me like I'm weird. Thanks for telling me stories about your messed up, crazy lives so that I feel better about mine. You guys allow me to rant about people none of you even knew existed, yet roast them as if you've known them for years. You know that one saying, "We've probably talked shit about you in our group chat?" Yup, that applies here. Also, no one minds when I go crazy over a boy I kissed at that one party six weeks ago, because you all do the same thing. In fact, this deserves another thanks. Thank you for letting me rant about boys endlessly and analyzing every detail with me. Thank God we're all boy crazy, or someone would get real mad. Our photo gallery is entirely composed of pictures of boys and screenshots. I'm not opposed to that.

Because of the group chat, I had a million and a half Dunkin and McDonald's trips because it was just randomly put in the group at 11 p.m. Those spontaneous adventures are seriously one of my favorite parts. Even now, someone will text, "Anyone wanna hang?" and boom, I'll have plans. As a loser, I sit home approximately five nights a week, so getting it down to four makes me feel like less of a loser. Need to find a place to pregame? Text the group chat. Need to find someone to go to lunch with? Text the group chat. Need someone to go to a party with you? Well, you should get the gist by now.

The point I'm trying to get at here is that we make a great team. You guys are forever friends, and being able to talk to you guys 24/7 is truly the best. Starting this conversation was the best decision anyone has ever made (to be honest I don't remember the origin) because it has brought us to be closer than ever. I love you beautiful crazy people. Don't ever change, because then our group chat will lose its five star ranking that I decided to give it.

Creating your schedule for the upcoming semester can be an exciting process. You have the control to decide if you want to have class two-days a week or five-days a week. You get to check things off of your requirement checklist. It's an opportunity for a fresh start with new classes (which you tell yourself you'll never skip.) This process, which always starts out so optimistic, can get frustrating really quickly. Here are 25 thoughts you have when registering for classes.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.
