Some girls have hazy perceptions of the options in front of them. Between what breakfast wrap to get at Starbucks, or more serious issues, like picking college majors, some girls have tons of different options that blend together, giving them what we often refer to as a “gray area."
But not us. There are girls -- like us -- who only know black and white. Sometimes, it’s a blessing. And sometimes it’s the furthest thing from that. Our this-or-that attitude in life helped us when we chose to major in politics because we wanted to save the world, or engineering because we knew our inventions could change it. It helped us when we knew we didn’t like the guy who wanted to date us, making it easier on all of us to let go. Only knowing black and white means we know what our dreams are, what we want to accomplish, and how we’ll do it. We don’t second guess ourselves because, quite frankly, we don’t have another option waiting. We refrain from giving ourselves all these options. We know we don't need them.
Knowing black and white means we know exactly who we are. We don’t have different ideas, or never tried to “be” anyone else; instead, we focus all our time to strengthen what we are.
Sometimes, people view us as heartless because there is often no room for question with us. After all, our mind is always made up. People think we’re unreasonable for only seeing things as they are, or for eliminating mixtures of options that will only confuse us in the end. We don’t understand why others mix things together and create this gray area. But then again, they just don’t see things black and white like we do.
When the world around us is changing, we know exactly what we believe in, and are not fooled by the changes we see. We pick our side -- black or white -- and view changes that way. We don’t know mixture. We never did.
The thing is, it's not like we're not indecisive. Some of us are. We just have a different way of going about our decisions. If we have two choices, we see them straight on. We don't dwell on what could be; rather, we face our two options and make a choice from there. We know what's in front of us and we take it at its value.
We know our favorite season, our favorite style, and where we’ll be working in ten years. We are doers. We use this black-and-white attitude to push us forward because we never had to stop to make all these decisions with all these options. We know what we want from a guy, and we know what we don’t. We know how our first apartment will be decorated, and everything that will be left out. We don’t fake friendships because you’re either friends or you’re not. And you definitely can only like winter or summer, because there are no similarities between the two.
We’ve never known gray. And we never will.
