Last year, I went on a weekend trip with a school group and we went to Orlando. One of THE BEST trips I've ever gone on. I learned a lot over the weekend and I met new friends, something that doesn't come very easily to me.
I remember it was late Friday night and we were getting ready to go to Disney Springs/Downtown Disney. One of my friends and I went to the restroom because it was getting a little claustrophobic in the little conference room the hotel had us in for the time being. We just sat in the restroom and just talked when all of a sudden, she asked me a completely different question. She asked me if I thought she was pretty. If I thought she'd be desirable. And I responded with of course she is. Inside and out. She's a beautiful girl with an amazing personality. She asked me the question because, like any high school function, you always have those girls and guys. And then you have the girls like us who want the guys but refuse to go through the means "necessary" for girls nowadays. In our age group anyways. Just because we don't want to do those things now means that we are not desirable because that's what the world is telling us.
I wrote this poem for my friend. Beware, it does not rhyme. I'm more of a spoken word!
What is with us?
The girls and guys who have substance and character
Who are not just in it for kicks
Why don't we ever get the girl
Why don't we ever get the guy
Society makes us think we are broken
We are broken because we refuse to show off too much skin
Because we refuse to hook up with another just because every else is doing it
Because we have moral principles and will not throw it all away for one minute, hour, or day of
childish "fun"
We may pick our relationships carefully but that doesn't mean we don't deserve to have them
We are cautious with our hearts because they have been broken
But that doesn't mean we don't deserve relationships. It doesn't mean we don't deserve to love and to be loved
