To the girl in the gym next to me,
You're killin' it.
No, perhaps you're not running as fast as someone else or your bathroom scale reads higher than you would like. The important part is that you're here, and you're working.
I don't know why you're here; maybe, like me, you're "sweating for the wedding," or maybe you've just gotten out of a breakup. Maybe you're here because you want to lose weight, or maybe you're here because you want to be healthier. Maybe you want Michelle Obama's arms, Carrie Underwood's legs or Beyonce's butt. You might even LOVE going to the gym, or if you're like me, you might be wondering if the water on your face is sweat, or actual tears. The important thing is that you're here.
I hope you never let the people around you discourage you. We are all covered in sweat, out of breath, so no one should have the time to pass judgement. Don't worry about whether you should wear leggings or shorts -- workouts suck when you're in uncomfortable clothing. If you have to take a fitness class slower than everyone else, then by all means, do it. If you overdo your workouts, you will be absolutely miserable.
Always remember that the number on the scale is not the most important indicator of progress and neither is pant size. Soreness will happen; take a break, and keep pushing. Goals will take time. Patience, patience, PATIENCE.
Most importantly, do it for yourself. Don't do it to make someone else happy. Find people who will support your goals, not create them for you. A good group of workout buddies is really valuable. Find them, and hold each other accountable.
Sincerely,
The girl next to you at the gym.
P.S. Here's some corgis on a treadmill for motivation.
