When I walked onto campus my freshman year at College of Charleston I knew one person. My roommate. Saying I "knew' her was a stretch too. We had met through The College's roommate survey program and met two times in person over the summer. Strangely, I wasn't too worried about not knowing anyone, which is wild because I worry about literally everything in my life. Luckily, my roommate and I shared a few of the same interests and got along very well.
Going to a completely new place where you know no one can be pretty terrifying, but the best part about being a college freshman is that there are plenty of other people who don't know anyone either. There aren't really cliques in most schools and you can make many friends by just introducing yourself in class or around campus. I really recommend going to school events throughout the year. This is how my roommate and I met our close friends we have now.
If Greek life is your kind of thing, don't be afraid to go through sorority recruitment. Through sororities, you can meet a lot of people who are going through the same things you are. Clubs and intramural sports are also a great way to meet people with common interests. Check your school's website and they should have a list of clubs and their faculty contact information.
The biggest thing to remember is to not be afraid you won't make any friends. One of the crazy things about college is how open for friendship most people are. So when one of your classmates asks you to study with them or the girls down the hall invite you for a movie night, go for it. You may make some of the best friends you've ever had.
