To The Friends I Never Expected to Make

Thank You

To The Friends I Never Expected to Make

Everyone has their group of friends. And everyone else knows who they are; they're just like you, or you like to do the same things, whatever the reason is that you're friends, people seem to know who your clan is. But every now and then, you befriend someone who doesn't fit in with your typical crowd. Maybe you were thrown into a group project together, or maybe you joined a club that they happened to be in; whatever the way, they aren't someone you normally would have chosen for yourself. When you mention them to others, they have to double check on the last name, not because it's bad, just because they're surprised. And you have to admit, you're surprised too.

So to the friends I never expected to make:

I'll be honest, I had no intention of ever being friends with you. We were from different worlds; we had no common friends, and for all I knew we had no shared interests whatsoever. But much like Venn diagrams, somehow our circles managed to intersect.

I didn't always know how to act around you right away. But after awhile, we warmed up to each other despite any hesitancies. Becoming friends with you turned out to be one of the best decisions I've made. You helped me to branch out and expand my horizons. I was forced out of my comfort zone and you taught me skills and things that I would have never learned otherwise.

I never thought that we would share inside jokes or give each other nicknames. I never thought that we would miss each other during breaks or text each other almost everyday. I never imagined having friends like you, but here we are, just a few months later and you are so important to me. I can't believe you've put up with my quirks and oddities but thank you.

It goes to show that even if someone doesn't fit your usual mold, they can still be some of the best people you'll ever meet. You can learn something from anyone: the friendly jock turns out to be the most professional and well-spoken person you know; the girl with who always has something to say is actually a passionate civil rights activist that isn't afraid to tell it like it is; the sweet girl, well she is super sweet, but she's also philanthropical and cares so much about her friends and their happiness. The friends I never expected to make became some of my favorite people. They shared some of their amazing qualities with me and helped me to become a more expanded and understanding person.

Sometimes the world just has a way of giving you things that you didn't even know you needed. Who knew I needed you guys? To the friends I never expected to make: thank you.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you donā€™t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldnā€™t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
