To The Friend Who Just Gets Me

I cannot thank you enough.

To The Friend Who Just Gets Me
Rachel Budke

Marcus Tillius Cicero once said, "Friendship improves happiness and abates misery, by the doubling of our joy and the dividing of our grief".

Friendship is an amazing thing, and being able to have a friend who just gets you is even better. I don't know what I'd do without that. Who would automatically know how I was feeling in the blink of an eye? Who else would know exactly what food I'm craving? Who knows when I need a nap and when I need a breather?

I want to thank the friend who gets me, for just getting me. You don't have to try to understand what I'm feeling, you just do. I think it's because we're the same person. We're so similar, it's scary. We think things at the same time, feel things at the same time, and do things at the same time. We're so similar we do similar things.

But what surprises me so much more is that even though we're so similar we still are able to be ourselves. We have our own personalities, strengths, and weakness. We both live our own lives and can live independently. However, we live better together. We compliment each other and our personalities go well together.

I am able to talk to you freely about my life and what I'm going through. I can talk about my past experiences with you and not feel silly or judged. I can talk about something that I don't have the words to describe, but it's okay because you know what I'm talking about. I can talk about life, love, happiness, and the future. I know what I say to you will not be twisted around nor will it be said to anyone else. I hope you feel you can do the same.

I know I can have silly moments with you, without any care in the world. I know I can laugh (and possibly snort, ew) about stupid things. I know I can tell you funny stories (or at least stories I think are funny) and you'll laugh along with me. We have the same sense of humor. Thank goodness or you probably wouldn't laugh at me.

I know I can talk to you about serious topics too. I know I can talk to you about religion, politics, love, life, and whatever else is on my mind. We may not always think exactly the same way on it but I know you'll talk through things with me and not judge me for my opinions whatsoever. We are open with each other about what we believe and how we feel about topics, even if they might be touchy ones.

We are open with each other, we talk and laugh with each other, and I'm so thankful for that. I am thankful to have a friend like you by my side through life. Thank you for just getting me.

We have a genuine beautiful friendship. Thank you for being my friend.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
