To The Friend That Always Has My Back

You keep me fighting even when I feel like giving up.

To The Friend That Always Has My Back
Ashley Yakopec

I don't need to start this out by describing the long list of laughs and memories we've made; we both know that would probably take countless hours and everyone would be bored. I'm not going to say we will be "best friends forever" or that you'll always be in my life since we're never exactly sure what the future holds. But one thing I can say for certain is that you've always been there for me, whether it be to listen to me cry about boys or come to baseball games with me when no one else would. Something I've noticed most about you is how you hold people together and fight for us when we can't even fight for ourselves sometimes, and you never feel the need to ask a question. That's why this one is for you.

To the girl that always has my back,

You've never been the person to put someone down because of their actions. You've always been that friend that anyone and everyone can lean on when they're having troubles because let's be real, everyone can be your friend, you don't discriminate. I've been through the lowest of the lows and somehow you always encourage me to come out on top. Throughout every flaw or setback that I may face, you support me and hope the best for me because you're the friend that's always had my back.

Sometimes it can be so hard to see friends leave your life for God knows what reason, but you've always been the one to hang around just a little bit longer. In reality, I've never really expected anyone to stay in my life for as long as you have because I know people leave, but you've stayed for the better. When the world is filled with darkness, I see the light within you. You're the friend with the heart of a warrior. So for that, I thank you.

When I think of all the good the world has to offer, I look at you and realize you deserve all the good this world has to offer. I look at you and I see greatness and I know one day you'll reach it, no matter what barriers stand in your way. Right now, you have a whole team rooting for you to do and be the best you could possibly be and this team will keep growing and I pray to God I continue to be a part of this team to see who you become.

Thank you so very much for always catching me when I fall. Thank you for seeing the best in me even when I couldn't see it within myself. And thank you for having my back when I was sure no one would. You did it without a second guess and you continue to do it for me, so thank you to the friend that always has my back.

Love you to the moon and back,

The girl that still stands by you.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
