"People only major in Communications because they're too lazy to get a real degree."
"Communications is the easiest degree."
"It's going to be hard to find a major because Communications is so broad."
Shut up. Just please. Stop talking. We hear these statements every time someone asks us what our major is. Just because we aren't a biology major, nursing major, or an engineering major doesn't mean we're dumb or less intelligent than anyone else.
Communications differs from other majors in several ways. We aren't science majors, so we don't have labs every day. We don't need to memorize all the bones and bone markings. We don't need to know a bunch of mathematical equations, because we don't plan on becoming engineers. But we do need to know how to write hundreds of newspaper editorials, papers, give presentations, and speak in front of crowds.
To some people, these obligations might seem like a joke. But to others, it's their passion. They have a desire in their heart to write for a newspaper, or be a reporter. They have a passion for planning events and communicating with people. Just because you don't share the same passion, that doesn't mean that you're major is more important.
So please, the next time you go to tell a Communications major that their major is easy and unimportant, consider how much time, effort, and energy they put into their classes and school work. We deserve the same respect as anyone else. It's difficult to be truly passionate about our major when people are constantly shaming and degrading us. We're tired of being looked down upon for not measuring up to what you consider to be "intelligent."
So to all you Communication majors, keep your head up and keep pursuing your dreams. Don't worry about other people's opinion as long as you’re happy and passionate about what you're doing.
