Hey college kids, it’s your summer break; I bet you’ve been waiting since the beginning of your spring semester back in January for this to finally come. I used to be a lot like that when I was still in school a few years ago. At this point I would already be a month into my break, and I’m sure a lot of you are probably at that point. Your dorm rooms have long been packed up, and you’re back home with your family. If it’s your first summer break it might feel a little weird; you’re not waking up in your dorm every morning expecting to go to class, and your roommate isn’t there 24/7.
Things are definitely different; especially when you are home and everyone else around you are most likely operating on a schedule that is entirely different from yours. It’s a lot to get used to, even if it is only for three months, and there will be times when you feel like there is nothing to do; but please, don’t go around saying that you are bored. I understand that it feels strange, your younger siblings or your younger friends are still getting up at six in the morning to get ready for school and you're not. There might even be a day or two when you have nothing to do until someone comes home in the late afternoon, but there are ways to make use of your free time.
For starters, think about how you actually have the opportunity to sleep in; because we all know that sleep is a privilege when you’re in college. Sure, you had the weekends to sleep, but it was never enough. Plus, if you’re not in summer courses, at an internship, or at your seasonal job, then you can finally get some projects done that you never had time for before. Maybe you wanted to start keeping a journal or create a blog or a YouTube channel, you have plenty of time to start that. Is there a movie out that you really wanted to see? You finally have enough time in the day to go and see it.
It’s also a great time to do things that you put off during the school year, like work out. It was probably a little difficult to find the right time to go to the fitness center and spend some time getting exercise (Unless you were a college athlete). Working out really does wonders for your body, so consider taking your boredom and turning it into some fitspiration. Then when working out leaves you sore and tired you can relax by taking a dip in your pool or using a cool face mask to help keep your skin in shape.
The list of things you can do in the next three months is abundant; it’s only a matter of whether or not you decided to do anything with it. There are things that you can do solo or things that you can do with your friends and family as well. Remember, there is always going to be someone in the family who will want to spend some time with you and your friends aren’t going to be busy 24/7. So please stop saying that you are bored, there is always going to be something for you to do. Take the free time you have now and make the most of it because pretty soon college will be over and you’ll have to spend your summers working and doing things like an actual adult. So again, don’t take the summer for granted and go do something.
