To The Bandwagon Cubs Fan

I'm one of you

Dear Fellow Bandwagoners,

I love baseball. My household is split three Cubs fans, two Cardinals fans, and then me. I’m a White Sox fan. Naturally, baseball season can at times be heated in my house. I can say without hesitation though that I hope the Cubs win the World Series.

I never dreamed those words would come out of my mouth, and I still cringe a little typing them. Let’s be honest, the Cubs haven’t been to the World Series in a REALLY long time. Did we really think that last year when every loyal cubs fan sheepishly said, “There’s always next year,” that next year would actually be this year?I certainly did not.

Yet here I am loving the game, excited for the team, and wanting the Cubs to win. Is that really such a bad thing? Ask me that a few months ago and I probably would have laughed at the thought of the cubs even making it to the World Series.

Now, I know what some of you are probably thinking, how could she actually want the Cubs to win? That’s a good question because I never thought I’d be in this situation.

I go to school near Chicago. I’m far enough away from the city that I don’t get exposure to the chaos happening downtown, but I’m excited to see the excitement on my campus. I can tell walking down the hallway of my dorm if something good or bad is happening when the game is on. We get loud.

It’s weird to cheer for a team I never thought I would cheer for. There’s a part of me that feels obligated to cheer for the Cubs. 108 years…need I say more?I know, total band wagoner.

There is this small (very small) part of me that has always been intrigued by the Cubs. This team has done so much losing and yet the fans remain so loyal. Part of me really wants to continue to be a part of that. The other part of me loves the rivalry between my family all season long. So, I probably won’t be jumping ship to the Cubs long term, sorry if I got anybody’s hopes up.

I do not own a Cubs shirt. I yell and scream at the TV like I’m the most invested person in the room. I didn’t care about the Cubs three months ago, and if we’re being honest, I probably won’t care about them much in another month. This article is the most public I have been and probably will be about this topic. Maybe I should amend this to say I am a half-hearted bandwagon fan.

Would it be amazing for the cubs to win?Absolutely, but regardless of the outcome of this series it has been amazing to jump on board and be a part of a team of fans unlike anything I’ve ever been a part of before. I mean come on guys; they have done A LOT of losing in years past. Isn’t about time they get the big win and can fly the ultimate W?

Sincerely,

A Cubs Fan Since Last Month

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
