To Study Or Not To Study

When there are so many better things to do than finals review.

Ah, finals week. The time when everything seems more tempting than studying. Even taking out the trash. OK, maybe not that far. But let's be real, when there seems like you have 100 things to study for, everything is dependent upon the grades you get on your last exam and you feel like your world is spiraling out of academic control, it is easy to do many things but study. Here's a list of things we often find ourselves doing to avoid studying for exams, or do because our finals start driving us absolutely crazy. Trust me, I've been guilty of most if not all things on this list myself.

1. Eat anything in sight.

Whether it's sneaking a few brownies, or debating whether you should tackle the leftover chinese or order pizza, finals week is a time to splurge on food. Forget calories.

2. Think about how much work you have to do without actually completing it.

By the time you're done thinking about it all, you'll probably be more stressed than if you actually began the work but hey, it's better than studying, right? Yay for complaining.

3. Social media and texting.

Who cares if you just checked Facebook 30 seconds ago and nobody messaged you? Maybe someone tried sliding into your DMs just now. And if not, you'll check again five minutes later - just in case.

4. Family and friends.

My personal favorite! Even though they'll probably try to tell you to study, it wouldn't hurt trying to ask them to possibly hang out and forget about all obligations elsewhere.

5. Watch a movie.

Or maybe two movies. Heck, you have Netflix. Why not an all-nighter for movies? That sounds about right.

6. Take pictures.

Something about choosing a filter for Instagram is a bit more interesting than reading Shakespeare, or cramming for a calculus exam. And besides, you've been taking killer selfies lately. Why not, am I right?

7. Sleep.

At the end of the day, there's no better escape from studying than grabbing a few z's. And why not? There's always tomorrow.

8. Clean.

Why not work on a house makeover when you have an exam worth 25 percent of your grade in two days? After all, there are some annoying spots on your window that you hadn't noticed before. And some vacuuming to be done. Yup, some intense vacuuming.

9. Speaking of that, you hadn't really noticed how into interior decoration you were.

This calls for shopping! Mall, here I come. Let's buy everything, even things we don't need because why not? Rolls into store like a boss.

10. Music.

Here's to some rap, pop or maybe some soulful music so you can sing your exam stress pain away. Drake, is that you?

But the most important thing to remember is that no matter how hard or how stressful exams might seem, you can do it. And nothing says success like a little work hard play hard right?

"I've only slept nine hours over the past four days, so I'm right on the verge of a nervous breakdown." - Leslie Knope

Parks and Recreation excitedly gathered around a laptop at a table in an office setting.

The library. Club lib. The place every college student goes when they want to try and be a productive member of society. Who better to explain your experience than Parks and Rec?

1. When you've finally found the energy to leave your dorm room and walk into the lib like

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
