To My Texas,

Being born and raised in your great state makes me quite proud. You’ve seen six different countries, and might I say I’m awe struck. You are very independent, and I’m proud to back you up. You have many wonderful qualities. Like Texas Country, now come on who doesn’t like a good Randy Travis or Bart Crow song? We have many celebrities who were born and raised here, from Beyoncé, Selena Gomez, Miranda Lambert and the King George Strait--to Mathew McConaughey, Hillary Duff, and the Jonas Brothers. We also have many famous War Veterans and Presidents that reside here too. Texas has a vast history behind us that many Texans are proud of. Yes I am saying us and we because Texas isn’t just one person, It’s a HUGE A** state. Many people and things make Texas great.

If you live here, you already know what I’m talking about, and if you don’t I feel so, so sorry for you. Texas is more than just a state, it’s more than just a slice of land in the greatest country on earth. It’s a state of mind. The people who live here are so diverse it’s insane. They have a sense of pride, a stubborn fighting side that you really just can’t find anywhere else. I’ve been all over this country and nothing feels like Texas. You could take one step over the border and the air just smells different. The people aren’t nearly as friendly, there is a significantly less amount of trucks on the roads, and you just don’t feel the same. I could be anywhere in Texas and feel at home.

Texas has shaped me into the person I am today. The people I have met, and the experiences I’ve had have all been because I live in Texas. The phrase “Don’t Mess with Texas Women” is something I have learned to live my life by. Texas women are fierce, they are confident and they don’t let anyone tell them what to do. They are fighters and lovers, mothers and daughters. No one can beat a good old fashioned Texas girl. You tell people you’re from Texas and they just look at you different, even if they won’t admit it, they know that Texas is superior to all other states.

Texas has the hardest working people that you will ever meet, along with the politest and the most prideful.

In Texas anything is possible. You can have four season of weather hit you all in one day. When there is a tornado warning you better believe no one is taking cover until they actually see the tornado. Just because there is a warning doesn’t always mean that there is one anywhere near you. So we will either sit out on our porch or keep looking out that door until we see for ourself. Not saying the meteorologist are lying because they aren’t, but Texas weather is unpredictable.

Now let me tell you about the food. It's drool worthy! From BBQ and Whataburger, to homemade meals and Blue Bell. Us Texans know how much we pride ourselves with our food. Our mommas teaching us at a young age on how to cook, because you have to end up cooking when she is off at work. When you grow older and on your own you’re going to have to cook and teach your children. Oh sweet tea and Dr. Pepper is what most Texans prefer depending on the event. Being bias Texas has the best BBQ, and boy do we know how to cook it. If you are ever traveling down an interstate you’ll most likely see a pull off sign for it or Buccees and Whataburger.

Texas high school football is the thing to do on Friday nights. It's literally the biggest sporting event aside from tailgating at a college game. If you ever heard the statement, “everything is bigger in Texas” they are correct. The state football games have more in attendance than an NFL game, and is actually played at the Dallas Cowboys Stadium. If you haven’t seen the football boys let me tell you they are huge! Especially as you go further up in division.

Now that I explained to you a little about how amazing you are Texas, many should come and see for themselves. There are many beautiful sights and scenery, friendly people, and amazing food. There is much more about Texas that I love, but not enough hours in a day for me to explain how wonderful you are.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

It's not all morning coffees and singing along to the radio.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!
