To My Niece

My biggest little blessing.

To My Niece
Samantha Lloyd

Growing up, I was never too sure whether I wanted kids or not. I had a big desire to travel and have a career and knew that children and marriage could potentially get in the way of that. I was 16 when my mind was changed forever when I held my niece for the first time and knew that some day, not that I wanted to be, but had to be a mother. The feeling I felt when l held that six-pound, blue eyed bundle of joy for the first, was unlike any other. I wanted to feel that way again, and again. I still do when I look at her six years later.

Watching her grow up has been one of the biggest blessings, and privileges. Knowing that I have been given a part in raising her into the little person she will become is absolutely wonderful. My niece has instilled in me a new level of compassion and empathy in me just by being the sweet little learner, question-asker, and messy little girl that she is. One day when she's old enough to understand this, she will know exactly what makes her so special to not only me but to everyone that she meets. She is happiness and innocence, and to me, she is love.

Rylee,

You, my love, are the light in a dark world. Ever since you were born, I've learned so much about life because of you, you continue to teach me new things every day. Your presence in this world has given me an opportunity to be the best person I can be, for you, and an opportunity to be a positive role model.

You are the most caring and loving little girl in the world. It's impossible to feel anything but happiness when you walk into a room. You bring out my inner child and help me remember how beautiful life truly is, and how beautiful innocence is. You are perfect, and I pray every day that the negativity of this world never takes that light and innocence from you. I hope you grow up feeling no hurt from anything, and if you do I'll always be right by your side. I hope that you never, ever let someone make you feel like you're not good enough. I hope that you never give up on your dreams, even if your dream is to be a princess. Shoot for the stars, kiddo.

More important than anything, I want you to know how much I love you. I never thought it was possible to love someone so deeply until I met you. You have brought so much joy into my world, and I can't wait to see the amazing person you grow up to be and the accomplishments that await you. For you, I will always be the very best me that I can be. I know your little eyes are always watching, and your little ears are always hearing what I say. I will always be your biggest fan, and I will always be there for you. I will continue to love you, day in and day out, whether you steal my phone to play games, climb all over me, or eat my ice cream. I love every single moment I get to spend with you, and I treasure you more than you will ever know. I am thankful for your existence every single day.

You are my biggest little blessing.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
