Fair warning: he will probably try and tell you the worst jokes. He's super opinionated so don't think you'll win every argument, but he will love you the most.

Dear newest sister,

I am going to be the first to cheer you on. I never thought I'd have a sister, but yet here you are. You weren't just picked for my brother — you were picked for me because let's face it, if I didn't like you it would be a problem. You are my built-in best friend. You are my new partner in crime. I hope you have enough stamina to keep up when I joke with him. We are a super sarcastic family, so you must be quick-witted in order to keep up. You matter to me because you matter to him. I will be here for you if it means that you are better for him. I'll remind both of you to get it together on those rough days. We will get to know each other because your thoughts and feelings matter to me, you must be special for him to let you in. I promise I will supply all the baby pictures and dirt for you to tease him with for the next eternity. I'll help you navigate through our family functions; tell you the ins and outs of our childhood when they don't. I'll prep you with all the questions that well-intentioned people may ask and I'll see your face that tells me you've had enough, don't worry, sister to the rescue.

You must be pretty patient because my brothers can have a short fuse. Even though I love them they can be jerks, let's be honest. They are independent but they need a soft place to land after their stressful days; they need someone to feed their brain.

They're the most important. I have never had men who protected me more, love me longer or are more consistent than they have been. I am the youngest so that means that they knew me from my first breath, I watched them grow and mimicked them as all siblings do. I annoyed them with Barbies and nail polish, they taught me about cars and Pokémon. I looked to them for advice and I would take a bullet for them any day.

Thank you. Thank you for loving them, for making them feel secure. Thank you for not taking advantage because they are so kind and big-hearted. Thank you for seeing their value underneath that hard exterior. Thank you for showing them unconditional love. Thank you for singing in the car, laughing until your side hurts, holding their hands through the greatest and most difficult obstacles. Thank you for changing your last name to match theirs. Thank you for reminding them that they are a gift to the earth, for being all that they need. Thank you for giving them the chance to start their own families.

You're one of us. Get ready for the long nights of heart-to-hearts, random dance parties and the best friendship you've ever known. I never thought I'd get a sister, but I'm so glad it's you.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
