To My Mother On Her First Mother's Day Without Her Mother

Dear Mom,

You are the best mother in the world. I know people always say that about their own moms, but it really is true, and I know where you got it from. You are strong, loving, kind, and faithful, just like your mother was. When we lost her, I was lost, and that made me think about how you must feel. I lost my grandma, but you lost your mom; you lost the woman who raised you, loved you unconditionally, and always saw you as her little girl. I can’t imagine losing you, Mom. I know that I will some day, and I also already know that it will be one of the worst days of my life, but it will never cancel out the best days of my life that have and will be with you. As I celebrate you on Mother’s Day, I will also celebrate Grandma Jo, for you would not be who you are without her, and neither would I. She changed my life, and you continue to change my life everyday.

On Mother’s Day, I want you to celebrate your mom, but I also want you to know that you don’t have to be strong all the time. It’s okay to feel sad, and it’s okay to cry. Just like Grandma Jo, you have always been the one who steps up and takes care of everybody else. For once, I am going to be the one taking care of you; I will be strong for you because you have always been strong for me. Spend this day smiling about the silly things Grandma Jo always said, reminiscing on the holidays of laughter and love, and maybe watch one of Grandma Jo's favorite soap operas in honor of her. Family was everything to Grandma Jo, and I know that the best way to remember her is by loving and appreciating family. I love you, Mom, and I know that Grandma Jo was nothing but proud of the woman that you have become.

Happy Mother’s Day, Mom. Happy Mother’s Day, Grandma Jo.

Love,

Gracie Jo

Being a part of any organization undoubtedly comes with the pitfalls of being grouped into negative stereotypes, and sororities are certainly no exception. Here are the top few things, that I find at least, are some of the most irritating misconceptions that find their way into numerous conversations...

8. "The whole philanthropy thing isn't real, right?"

Well all those fundraisers and marketing should would be a waste then wouldn't they?

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
