Dear Little Sib,

I know that you've been looking forward to this time for so long, and I couldn't be more excited for you. I was in your shoes just a few years ago, but it just doesn't seem real that you are already catching up to me. Sooner or later, you'll be in college right by my side and I just can't fathom the fact you are graduating high school so soon. Whether I like it or not, you're growing up and it's becoming harder to call you my "little" sibling.

I know that you have a lot of negative thoughts about the high school you are leaving, and I can't blame you because I was the same way for a long time... but, I've had some time to think since then and I want to try and keep some of those positive memories in your head as well. Think of the good times as you leave to go far away from home, because you will miss it.

Think about your best friends, the easy classes, the familiar hallways, the school dances, your favorite extra curricular activities, sports, and anything else that made you smile. High school isn't all that terrible and I know you had some good times. Changes are going to be a frequent in your upcoming years. Change of town, school, friends, dorms, and lots else. So, keep those familiar memories close to home.

I'm telling you this now, not to try and force you to come all sympathetic around graduation or be nice to the mean girls, or even patch up lose ties, but so you think of what you want to do before you leave, and how you want to leave your mark as a senior of 2016.

Although graduation practices, graduation itself, and all of the graduation parties get old, enjoy them! They only happen once and it's an unforgettable experience. Growing up in a small town you will be graduating in a very small class, take pride in knowing every name that gets called and having a memory with all of your high school friends.

I also wanted to tell you that your whole life isn't high school. I am so excited for you because you and I both have always had an excitement of leaving high school and moving on to college. It's your time. You'll be going on your college orientation, meeting new friends, finding your dorm, and moving away from home for the first time in your life, scary right? Thankfully you picked the best college in the world (Ohio University) where your big sister will be right here if you need anything.

But, even if you didn't pick the same school as me I know you would be just fine. You are strong minded, independent, intelligent, and driven! Congratulations on such a milestone.

Love,

Your Big Sib

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
