To My Hometown, Thank You

Remember that place you couldn't wait to leave?

I grew up in your typical small town where everyone knows everyone and you can't walk into the grocery store without seeing at least one person you know. The town where not much happens, and when something does it's a big deal. My hometown is the place all of us kids couldn't wait to see in our rear view mirror. Now that I have left my hometown semi-permanently, I can see everything I was leaving behind and I realized that I owe my hometown a "thank you" for all it has done for me and prepared me for.

Thank you for:

1. Giving me a fun and memorable childhood

Being an adult has it perks, but there's nothing I wouldn't give to go back in time and really cherish the times when the only thing I had to stress about was when I was going to hangout with my neighbors that day.

2. Letting me meet some of the best friends I could've asked for

If I hadn't been raised here I would've never met a lot of my friends and I wouldn't be the person I am today without them. Even though many of us have gone our separate ways, I'll always consider you guys my friends.

3. Always making me feel safe

Whether it was at work, school, or my neighborhood, I have never felt unsafe or in any kind of danger in my hometown. I felt completely comfortable walking to and from my car after a late night grocery shopping trip or while walking downtown late at night with my friends for Movies In The Park.

4. Missing it while I was gone

The first time I left my hometown for an extended period of time was when I moved to college right after high school. It was then that I realized how much I missed my quaint tiny town and all of its quirks.

5. Being the place where many lessons were learned

There have been many firsts in my hometown. Some of them good, some not so good but that's okay because I have learned many lessons here the hard way.

6. Always making me feel like I have a place where I belonged

Right after I moved away to college I had a hard time figuring out where I belonged and was just trying to find my place. But I know that no matter where life takes me after college, my hometown will always welcome me back.

7. Giving us the desire to get out and experience something different

I am thankful that I was eager to leave my hometown because if I hadn't had that desire, I wouldn't have chosen the best college for me which is where I am at right now, and I wouldn't have had the same opportunities and experiences that I have now.

It's okay to want to leave your hometown and go explore new options. But before you leave, reflect on all the great memories and friends this town has given you and realize that you are lucky to have grown up here. Some people don't get the opportunity to have a love for their hometown like I do for mine.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
