To My Grandfather And Best Friend

When your best friend is much more than that

To My Grandfather And Best Friend
Megan McCallum

Everyone has that one person in their family. That person who they're closer to than anyone. That person is literally their person. For most people, it's their sibling or parent. For me, it's my grandfather. It's always been him. We've been best friends and inseparable since I was a baby. From our little jokes to our conversations that would get us in trouble if anyone ever heard them. He's the only one who has ever really understood me and always had my back, even when I was wrong (which is often). We just have a relationship that nobody but us really understood. From him whispering sarcastic remarks under his breath when nobody but me was listening, making us both laugh uncontrollably and getting weird looks from the rest of our family that made us laugh even harder. To our long walks to the store together to get him scratch tickets. Spending time with him is never boring.

The thing about him is, not only is he my grandfather, but he's my best friend. He's the one who taught me how to read, and gave me my love of reading. He taught me everything and made me the person I am today. He's been through so much in his life and still manages to smile and be the kindest person ever. He taught me not to be angry at the world and to always smile no matter what the situation. To always look on the bright side, to always laugh and find something to laugh about.

The conversations that he and I have always make me laugh. From his comments about people to his amusing thoughts on life, to some comments that don't make sense at all but they make me laugh. I cherish every single moment he and I spend together. Even if it's just sitting around watching Watters' World and him watching me stress out over how little people know about history (as a history major I am actually personally offended by this.)

I just wanted to thank you. Thank you for always loving me and supporting me. Thank you for always having my back and understanding me. Thank you for just being you. I love you, old man. He and I have been best friends since day one. He's always been my go-to person and my favorite person in the world. He was the main male figure in my life, the first male to love me and teach me how to love and how I should be treated. Even though he lives in Florida now, he is still my best friend and when I visit him it is like nothing changed. So this one is for him. Thank you to the most amazing grandfather and man I have ever met. I love you more than words can say and you will continue to be my person.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.

girl with a hat

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.

Blair Waldorf Quote
"DESTINY IS FOR LOSERS. IT'S JUST A STUPID EXCUSE TO WAIT FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM HAPPEN." - BLAIR WALDORF.

The world stopped in 2012 when our beloved show "Gossip Girl" ended. For six straight years, we would all tune in every Monday at 9:00 p.m. to see Upper Eastside royalty in the form of a Burberry headband clad Blair Waldorf. Blair was the big sister that we all loved to hate. How could we ever forget the epic showdowns between her and her frenemy Serena Van Der Woodsen? Or the time she banished Georgina Sparks to a Christian summer camp? How about that time when she and her girls took down Bart Bass? Blair is life. She's taught us how to dress, how to be ambitious, and most importantly, how to throw the perfect shade.

Because we made it, and because high school seniors deserve to know what they're getting themselves into

too tired to care

We've all been there. From move-in day to the first finals week in college, your first term is an adventure from start to finish. In honor of college decisions coming out recently, I want to recap some of the most common experiences college freshmen experience.

1. The awkward hellos on move-in day.

You're moving your stuff onto your floor, and you will encounter people you don't know yet in the hallway. They live on your floor, so you'll awkwardly smile and maybe introduce yourself. As you walk away, you will wonder if they will ever speak to you again, but don't worry, there's a good chance that you will make some great friends on your floor!
