To My Future Students

I cannot wait to teach you everything I know!

Dear Kiddos,

Let me start by saying, I cannot wait to meet you all! As time draws nearer to my semester of student teaching, the more my excitement grows. This spring I have had the pleasure of getting to teach some wonderful kids and this experience has shown me that I am truly in the field that I belong in. I may not have told you all this but my whole life I thought that I was destined for medical school. I was bound and determined that I was going to go to college to be a biology major and eventually find my way to medical school. And, I did exactly that. I came to Marshall and my freshman year was spent as a biology major and let me tell you a secret, I hated it.

I knew that a change was needed and I followed my natural instinct to education and I haven't turned back. Now at this point I don't know if you're going to be my science students or English students but I hope I can provide you with the best learning experience you've ever had in these subjects. I promise you all that I will give you 110% of my efforts because that is what you all deserve. I promise to always be the best me that I can be for you all. I know that we will have highs and we will have lows but I will always be on your all's sides because you are my kiddos and I am your teacher. You're the reasons I entered this field of work and the reasons that I will love what I do. Now I know that this job won't be easy and there will be days that we test each other greatly but the happy moments will always out weight the bad ones.

Oh and I already have the biggest list of ideas for the projects we'll do and the lessons that I can teach you all. If I'm your science teacher, look out because I've got plans for play dough models, making our own periodic tables, dioramas, and hopefully I can get my hands on materials for dissections! If I'm your English teacher, get ready for some readers theaters, graphic novels, debates, and creative projects out the wazoo. Now let me get one thing straight, there will be days where I have to lecture and you guys will take notes and oh boy I can hear the groans already but I promise, the fun projects we do will be worth the boring days that you will have to endure. And who knows, you may even learn a thing or two when I lecture (you definitely will but you guys will enjoy the learning, trust me).

I know that we are going to have the best time together and I truly cannot wait to get to meet and get to know each and every one of you. You all are already so special to me and you don't even know it yet.

See you soon,

Ms. Craigo

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

College without friends is like peanut butter without jelly.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
