I went to a very prestigious high school where everyone was motivated in their own field. I was constantly surrounded by people who excelled and were constantly looking for ways to improve. My friends were the kind of people that supported whatever I decided to do…but at the end of the day, they were still judging me for staying here in Las Vegas. Many of my friends went off to far away colleges with great programs--and I stayed here. Everyone would always talk about UNLV in a poor way and it was everyone’s last option, and some even refused to go to UNLV even if that was their last option. But yet, here I am, a senior at UNLV and proud to be a rebel. To my friends that judged me for staying here at UNLV, here is a list of reasons why I actually love it.
1. I found a community within Greek Life.
I will also add that many people have judged me for joining a sorority. However, joining a sorority on campus has been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I have found friends who genuinely care about me and support me in my goals and dreams. Those kinds of people don’t come around too often.
2. I have found instructors and mentors that have reminded me that I'm on the right path.
For a long time after high school I really didn’t know what I wanted to do. The one thing I was passionate about didn’t work out and so I was stuck for a few years debating whether or not I picked the right major. I have had instructors who instill the passion back into me and remind me that Elementary Education was the clear choice for me. Also, I've met people who have mentored me through this awkward stage of life.
3. I like being close to home.
Yes I do realize that you are supposed to grow up after high school, but who says I can’t do that while in Vegas? I didn’t have to take out any loans and I’ve even managed to save up some cash for when I do decide to move out. Also, it would be hard for me to leave a home that gives me food and love on the daily.
4. I found a passion for student ministry.
I now spend the majority of my time working with high school students, mentoring them, hanging out with them, or just being there for them. I love being able to work with students who were just like me in high school, and slowly guide them towards good decisions.
5. I’m happy.
There was a time when I so badly wanted to move away and go off to college…but staying here was probably the smartest decision I could have ever made. I’ve learned so much about myself that I’m sure I wouldn’t have learned while struggling on my own. So for those of you who wonder why I’m still here, now you know! So stop judging me.
