To My Friend Of 18 Years

Friendship is a crazy thing. Everyone who comes into your life has a purpose. Some friends have a very specific purpose to fulfill. They stay around until they have fulfilled that purpose and then they move along. Some friends are around for a season. They are there to help through a specific season in your life and once you are through that season, they move along. And some friends are there for a lifetime. They see you through everything. No matter what life hands you, this person is there to face it head on with you. They constantly support you and encourage you. They believe in you when you have lost all faith in yourself. They see you through it all and love you no matter what.

Friendships like this are truly rare. I am lucky enough to say I have a few that have withstood the tests of time. To my best friend of 18 years, thank you. Thank you for coming into my life that random day in 2nd grade and for braving all of life's awkward stages with me. We have survived Oregon Trail (quite literally) and have written more notes in milky pens than I can count. We have seen first crushes and first loves. We have seen breakups and nights of loneliness.

Thank you for always quoting One Tree Hill with me and for forever watching Laguna Beach reruns with me. You will forever be my go to DJ because I truly love your ability to find a song for any occasion or situation.

Thank you for always believing in me and for continuously supporting me in all I do, no matter how crazy it may seem. You bring out a side of me that I often forget exists. Our friendship is one of the greatest treasures I have found in this life and I am proud and honored to say I have known you for 18 years, which is also a little terrifying. 18 whole years?!

Thank you for reminding me that yes, people leave, but sometimes people stay and when they do, it is truly magical. Our friendship is magical and I cannot wait to see what the next 18 years has in store for us.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
