To My Family, From Your College Kid

Dear Family,

Even though I go to college relatively close to home, I still feel as if I have moved away. Thank you for recognizing that I wanted to go "off" to college even though I stayed in-state. I know I don't visit very often- maybe two or three times a semester, but when I'm home, I don't want your day-to-day activities to change just for me.

I love coming home and having to play chauffeur for my siblings if I want a car for the day. I love being caught up in the hectic-ness of making dinner and doing laundry and feeding the cat and doing chores. I love going back to a normal "home-life" for a few days before going back to the stress and everyday routine in college.

I'm sorry that I always ask for the exact same meals every time I'm home, but college has a lack of Dad's chili, so by the time I get home I really need that comfort food. Don't apologizing for only having leftovers or taco making's in the fridge- those sound great to me!

I apologize for hogging the washer and dryer for two days, but the ones at home don't work as well as the school ones, so I can't shove all of my laundry in one washer at home. More loads= more time. (Oh, and the bath- I really miss those too.)

Yes, I do want to play that card game with you. Don't be so hesitant and question if I need to do homework. I will have the whole rest of the school year to do homework, I want to play the game with you until the point where we are yelling at each other because that's how competitive we are.

I will be attempting to hold the cat as often as possible, I don't get enough animal love at school. Even if she tries to run away, I will be making efforts to make her love me more than you for the next few days.

Finally, thank you for supporting me. Thank you for letting me live on campus and go on adventures with friends. Thank you for letting me work a summer job that I actually wanted to do. Thank you for supporting me in my choice of major, and in my excitement and plans for studying abroad.

Thank you and I love you,

Your college kid

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
