To My College Roommate, My Forever Friend

My first thought was, "why me?"

When starting freshman year of college, I was going into a room with six other girls. I had met my roommate on facebook and I was excited to have that cliché friendship with her.

Boy, was I wrong.

That roommate moved out in September and I didn't receive a new one until Christmas break when one of my suitemates texted our group chat saying, "AL! YOU HAVE A ROOMMATE!"

ah jeez. why me. I didn't need another crazy roommate and I didn't know this new girl coming in.

I was still very welcoming and offered to come back from break early to help her move in. I was somewhat excited to meet her, yet dreaded every waking moment.

After meeting my new roommate in January of 2017, I quickly realized she didn't suck as bad as I thought she was going to.

Her name is Molly Riseman and for the past year, she has become one of my best friends.

I'm very thankful to have someone like Molly who makes me laugh uncontrollably and checks in on me when she goes home for the weekend.

She's always down to get food with me, yet she is the tiniest person I know. I bet you didn't know people can actually be allergic to fruits and vegetables. Maybe when we were like 6 we hoped that we were allergic to green beans so we didn't have to eat them, but Molly is 21 and physically cannot eat an uncooked fruit or vegetable.

We're getting off course here, but the whole fruit and vegetable thing will never get old to me.

This past fall when Hurricane Irma hit the Carolinas, I brought Molly home with me because somehow we never get tired of each other. Molly and I have never had one actual fight. I did happen to break her finger though, but I think I made up for it.

Molly was someone that came into my life that I never knew I needed in my life. Like you think you're fine and happy and doing well, but she came into my life and somehow it made me better. I laugh a lot more, I lose a lot of sleep, and I'm almost at a loss for words because Molly just does so much for me that I don't know how to put it into words.

Thank you for being the best roommate, person, and friend who came into my life so suddenly and decided to stick around. You're a one in a million friend, Mol, and I love you so very much.

In honor of Mother’s Day, I have been thinking of all the things my mom does for my family and me. Although I couldn’t write nearly all of them, here are a few things that moms do for us.

They find that shirt that’s right in front of you, but just you can’t seem to find.

10 Reasons To Thank Your Best Friend

Take the time to thank that one friend in your life you will never let go of.

Thank You on wooden blocks

1. Thank you for being the one I can always count on to be honest.

A true friend will tell you if the shirt is ugly, or at least ask to borrow it and "accidentally" burn it.

2. Thank you for accepting me for who I am.

A best friend will love you regardless of the stale french fries you left on the floor of your car, or when you had lice in 8th grade and no one wanted to talk to you.

Everybody gets sick once in a while, but getting sick while in college is the absolute worst. You're away from home and your mom who can take care of you and all you really want to do is just be in your own bed. Do as I say, not as I do.

Your eyes widen in horror as you stare at your phone. Beads of sweat begin to saturate your palm as your fingers tremble in fear. The illuminated screen reads, "Missed Call: Mom."

Growing up with strict parents, you learn that a few things go unsaid. Manners are everything. Never talk back. Do as you're told without question. Most importantly, you develop a system and catch on to these quirks that strict parents have so that you can play their game and do what you want.

"Friends" maybe didn’t have everything right or realistic all the time, but they did have enough episodes to create countless reaction GIFs and enough awesomeness to create, well, the legacy they did. Something else that is timeless, a little rough, but memorable? Living away from the comforts of home. Whether you have an apartment, a dorm, your first house, or some sort of residence that is not the house you grew up in, I’m sure you can relate to most of these!
