To My Brother As He Enters His Senior Year

My baby brother is a senior?

To My Brother As He Enters His Senior Year
Marilyn Palmer

With summer vacation nearing its end, I begin to think about how time seems to be going by faster than ever. This fall I will be entering my third year of college and it just seems unreal to me that I graduated high school in 2014, and in 2017 you will be graduating. There are a couple things that I think would be helpful to you in your senior year. Just make sure you don’t wish your time away because once it’s gone, it’s gone.

Senior year goes by faster than you can even imagine, but you’ll know what I mean when your name is being called to walk across the stage. I know sometimes the whole “school spirit” thing can sound lame but it really isn’t. Make sure you participate in the senior week, all of the pep rallies, sporting events, senior picnic, prom and the senior trip.

For me, sports was a huge thing in high school and honestly that is what I miss the most from school. Your senior year is the best for sports because you look back on all the years that you've been playing and you get to see how far you've come. You and I have been playing sports since we could walk and gearing up for your last game will definitely be bittersweet. Play for you but also play for mom and dad because they love to watch you play. You have to know it’s not just a milestone that is ending for you but for them as well.

Make sure you are studying and putting your all into your academics. I know right now you think that the regent's scores, SAT scores, and final exam scores won’t really matter but a part of me wishes I had studied more and put more of my time into them just for my own piece of mind. You might not have to worry as much because school comes easy to you, but all I ask is that you give your all.

Making friends and memories is another huge part of senior year. Expand your friend circle, hang out with people you normally wouldn’t. Do adventurous things, laugh a lot, take lots of pictures do things and try new things that you never thought you would. You have plenty of time to be an adult so don’t push it yet. Take things day by day, there's no rush. One day you’ll wake up with a family, a job and bills to pay and you’ll say “I wish I hadn't wished it away.” Right now focus on being young and having your sports, friends and less responsibility of course.

Senior year is coming and there’s a lot to look forward to. Your senior pictures, ordering your cap and gown, getting your yearbook signed by all your friends and favorite teachers and the big night where you walk across the stage and all the years of school flash before you. That is your moment and your time, enjoy it. Walk across the stage big and proud and get your diploma, just don’t trip and fall. I’ll be there in the crowd, crying I'm sure.

Good luck with your senior year, I am so proud of you and I’m always here to give you the advice you need because, well, I’ve been through it.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.
