Being in a relationship forces you to connect with not only one other person but all of the important people in their lives. Being a single child I wanted nothing more than a sibling while I was growing up. I never thought that by finding a boyfriend that I could find a person to fill the sibling hole in my life. I’ve watched you grow up over the course of these past few years. I’ve watched you lose friends and start one of the biggest adventures of your life, high school. You may not be MY sister, but I can say that I love and care for you like my own sister. That being said I just want you to know a few important things about the two of us and our relationship.

You can tell or ask me anything.

I know we don’t always talk and we are not as close as I wish we were, but I want you to feel comfortable telling or asking me things. I have made mistakes and lived through many of the things that high school and the rest of your life will throw at you. I want to share those experiences with you. I don’t want you to make the same mistakes that I did. I want you to get the most out of everything in your life. Even if you think I will be upset or mad, don’t worry, tell me anyway. I promise it will always stay with us. I won’t get mad at you for anything. I want nothing more than to help you.

I am always here for you, no matter what.

Even if your brother and I fight or breakup you will ways be important to me. I want you to know that. and I want you to know that even if it is 1 a.m. I am always willing to talk to you and make time for you. There is nothing more important in my life that you can’t come to me. Even if you think I am too busy, I’m not. Come to me anytime you need anything. Even if you are just bored and need someone to text or Snapchat, I am here. Always.

I support every choice you make wholeheartedly.

Every path you take in life will lead you to a great adventure. I want you to make choices for yourself and see where you end up. I support you no matter what you decide in life. You can always count on me to be your number one fan and your biggest supporter. Making your life your own is so important and I have watched you make choices that you were unsure of at first. But just like I told you, they ended up being the best choices. Leaving people behind allows you to move forward in your own life. I want nothing more than the best for you.

I am so proud of the person you are becoming.

Watching you grow up into an amazing confident freshman has been on of the highlights of my relationship with your brother. I’ve seen you graduate the sixth grade, join volleyball, and live your life to the fullest in high school so far. Sure you’ll change many more times before your senior year, but I will always have a reason to be proud of you. You’ve become such a strong young woman (and yes, I have to remind your brother you are not 5 anymore) and I know you will become even stronger as you grow up. Seeing pictures from your first high school dance made me so happy and proud. I wish I could have been there to see your big day, but don’t worry, I was so proud of you on that day.

I can’t wait to see what the future holds for us.

Just like I can’t wait for my future with your brother, I am excited to see how our relationship builds. I hope that it brings us closer together. I hope that it allows us to do and share things together. I can’t wait to see you grow up even more right before my eyes. I hope the future gives you everything that you want and need in life.

I tell you all of these things because they are true. I want you to know that every single word here is true. I cherish our relationship and every moment of the time we spend together. I can’t wait to see how the next six years goes. I can only hope that it is as wonderful as the last six. Remember, you are important to me and I am always here for you.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

It's not all morning coffees and singing along to the radio.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!
