To My Not-So-Little Brother

No matter what you do, I will always be proud of you.

To My Not-So-Little Brother
Macarena Calzado

Dear Not-So-Little Brother,

A lot has changed in a year. You're now taller than me (although let's be honest, we all knew that was going to happen), you're more independent, and overall just not the little baby brother I was always used to. I spent a year away at college and come back to basically a full grown man (just kidding you still have a long way to go, buddy). But really, I see you growing up more and more each day and am so excited to keep seeing the man you will continue to grow into.

But along the way of life, it may be hard to stay true to who you are. Don't ever change who you are just because some people don't approve. Remember what mom always told us, "In a room full of 10 people, 5 may not like you but there are always the 5 who do!" Focus on those who love you and stay true to yourself. And don't lose that childlike sense that you have always had. It's one of my favorite things about you.

When you get a girlfriend (not too soon though, please), treat her right. There are so many stories about boyfriends treating their girlfriends terribly, and I would never want to hear this story about you. Love her and show her what it means to be truly loved just like I know you can.

Whatever happens and however successful you become (because I know you're going to be wildly successful), don't forget about your family. We love you so much and want to share in your joy and success.

And from your older sister, I will always be here for you. If you need to call me at 3 am, I'll be here. You will always have me, and I will always be proud of you and whatever major and career you choose. I love you and don't you ever forget it. And stop growing up so fast, please.

Love,

You Big Sister

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

It's not all morning coffees and singing along to the radio.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!
