To my Best Friend who has only ever lived 15 Minutes Away From Me
Courtney Shapiro

To my Best Friend,

Well this is it. In the upcoming week we are taking that first leap into our futures by going to college. I will be attending Hofstra University, while you will be at the University of Rhode Island. For the first time in ten years we won't be 15 minutes away from each other. I won't know the roads to turn down in order to pull right in your driveway. I'll have to use a gps just to get to your new home. A lot of things will be different but I know our friendship will stay the same. As our time living so close to each other starts to disappear I just want you to hear a couple of things.

I think at first this change will be hard for the both of us. I won't be able to just pop over for a vent session or come over to see how your family is doing. I can't bring you coffee or food to brighten you up after you've had a bad day. I can't stay over your house for three days at a time anymore because we'll both have class. We can't meet each other at the Time to Eat Diner at midnight just because we miss each other. You won't be able to use my house as an escape from your sister or your dad. And I won't be able to use yours for stress relief on your trampoline late at night or constantly raiding your fridge or pantry. So many memories have been created in each of our homes since we were eight years old.

Throughout the years our friendship has continued to grow. We never went to the same school, but it has only helped us become closer. We've supported each other and pushed each other to be our best selves. I'm excited to see how we will grow when we are three and a half hours away from each other in different states instead of 15 minutes in the same state.

I have so much faith in our friendship. I know that going away from each other for a couple of months is something we can manage. We have survived summers apart while I was at camp for 2 months and you're home. We have survived high school even though we were never in the same building so I just know we can survive college too. You're my best friend, my non biological sister, and my person. You are a part of my extended family and I'm incredibly grateful for all of our memories. I'm ecstatic to begin our futures and I know you're going to blow everyone away. You're incredible and I'm lucky for the ten years that we have spent so close to each other. Even if we're apart, we'll always be together.

As they say, distance makes the heart grow fonder and I know being farther apart will hurt us at first, but you'll always be my best friend no matter where we live.

Much love,

Your best friend.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
