To My Best Friend the Nursing Major

Nurses may not be angels but they are the next best thing.

To My Best Friend the Nursing Major

Nursing majors are such a busy bunch of people. Always running around with clinical, hours of homework, and studying. But they are working towards such a promising and rewarding career.

Things can get tough sometimes, both within the major and outside of it, but just know that you always have my full support.

So to you my best friend the nursing major, never forget:

1. I'm proud of you

I have heard and seen time and again how strenuous your major can be. But I also see you handling it and balancing everything that you do. You're a natural really, I just see it in the way you act, but studying to become a nurse has helped you break out of your shell and become the person I know you have always wanted to be. You've become more confident in yourself, and all around happier because you are doing something that you love. I couldn't be a prouder best friend seeing you like this.

2. I'm sorry

I know that I don't understand everything you tell me when you come home from class or clinical; I just don't have much of a sciency brain. But I try to nod and frown at the appropriate times. I do love it when you try to explain things to me, even if I don't get it right away; but I want to understand what you love. And not to worry, I'll always watch Grey's Anatomy with you and pick up as many terms as I can. If there is one thing I know, it's that every day is a beautiful day to save lives.

3. I'll do anything I can to help you

A lot of your time is spent practicing and studying for your future career. I know how fulfilling it's going to be to be able to help people every day of your life and I can't wait for you to get there. But until then, I will be your dummy. I'll always be here for you to bounce vocab definitions off of and you can tourniquet my arms all you want and practice your head to toe assessments on me. And anytime you just need a good cry or a hug, I'll be here for that too.

4. I know you always have a lot on your plate

I know sometimes I get frustrated because you are busy studying or something, but it is only because I love spending time with you. Deep down I'm just jealous because you know exactly where you are heading in life. Even while I'm missing you though, I really love seeing you do what you do. And when you are hid away in the library or wherever, studying and working in to the wee hours of the morning, I'll be the one to bring you coffee and snacks to make sure you can keep going.

5. I want you to spend time having fun

It might seem like I'm nagging you to spend time watching Netflix or go out to dinner or come apple picking with me, but I am a firm believer in giving yourself well-earned breaks. And I know that nursing is fun and wonderful, but it is also stressful. You deserve to have some relaxation time when you can afford it.

6. I love seeing how happy it makes you

Even with the amount of stress and hard work that goes in to being a nursing major, behind those baggy eyes and tired expressions is a satisfied smile. And when you complain, I can tell that you don't really mean it. You talk so often about how you can really see yourself doing this for the rest of your life. It makes you happy. And seeing you happy makes me happy too.

7. I can't wait

I tell everyone that my best friend is a nursing major and that you're going to be so great. You know that I am going to be that person that makes you send a picture on your first day of your real job. I'll text or call you as soon as you get out and make you tell me every excruciating detail of your day. I'll expect weekly followups to know exactly how much you are loving your life because you chose to be a nurse. I know you're going to be so satisfied, so happy, and I can't wait to see that.

You will always have me to lean on. I love you, future nurse!

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

Itā€™s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we donā€™t get our way. Itā€™s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean theyā€™re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
