Adam,
You were one of my first friends when I moved to North Carolina. I was the new kid, and while you didn't necessarily make me feel welcome, you were a good friend in your own weird way. You made sure I didn't feel left out by welcoming me into your friend group, and you also made be a better musician.
We went to different high schools, and for awhile, we still talked a lot. We were both busy with marching band, new friends, and school in general, but you always made time for me when I needed to talk. We stayed up until 4 a.m. multiple days in a row over one summer, and for awhile, you were my only confidant. We were fourteen when I started giving you credit to saving my life.
Towards the end of high school, we weren't talking as much. We were both really busy, but you always texted back whenever I texted you. We got to hang out a few times here and there, and it was always like old times — lots of sassiness, lots of self-depreciation from the both of us, and deep talks.
When college started, we didn't talk until the summer after sophomore year. You gave me a tour of UNCW and we caught up a little bit. It had been going on two years, but we picked it up again. Then, when I transferred here, you were really my only friend for a while. You answered any and all questions, grabbed lunch with me (almost) any time I asked, and you were always here for me —even when senior year was torturous for you.
And now, you're only a few weeks from graduating. Soon you'll be off to grad school (who would've thought?), and if history is correct, we probably won't talk as much. But I just want to publicly say (and humiliate you, let's be real) how proud of you I am. You deserve to be happy and have good things in life, and they're happening for you whether you believe it or not. I can't wait to see what amazing things you do, even if it means we won't be able to see each other as often as we do.
Adam, thanks for mostly-always grabbing breakfast food with me when I need you. Thanks for answering your phone when I need you. Thanks for being sassy with me, and thanks for always telling me how it is. I always know I can count on you, and I hope you know I will always return the favor. You're always going to be considered one of my best friends.
Good luck with graduating and continuing studying the brain and what not. I hope going from the beach to the mountains doesn't kill you.
