To My Best Friend In The Army

Your bravery makes me love you even more.

To My Best Friend In The Army
Samantha Hebert

Very few people in this world have the pleasure of meeting someone you will consider a best friend or a soul mate. When I met you, I knew I was one of the lucky ones. We were only kids, but I knew that I had met someone really special. No matter what or who got in the way, we always had each other to lean on, and that never changed. Here we are seven years later, and I still love you just as much as I did then.

We hit bumps, especially in high school. I want to thank you for always being by my side no matter what, and being such a big part of my life. I hope everyone has the chance to meet someone as special as you someday. Someone they can turn to, someone they can text at any time of night. Someone that will go to any extent to make sure you are happy. We have some of the best memories together, memories I will never forget. Playing video games at your mom's house, bringing you snacks in the middle of class, going to concerts, and even you getting me blow up toys from the circus.

Your quirky sense of humor is one of my favorite things in the world. I know that no matter the seriousness of the situation, I can count on you to crack a joke. The day you told me you were enlisting in the Army, I was hoping it was just another joke. When I think of the Army, I picture what I see in movies. I see sadness, I see hurt, and most of all, I see danger. I could not imagine you in that situation. I just could not get myself to imagine my tall, stalky best friend out there far from home defending his country. I was not okay with it, but I knew I had to be.

I remember the day you left. I was working, and I went on my break to see a text from you thanking me for being there, and how much you will miss me. I had tried to block out the idea of you leaving for the entire summer, but in that moment, I knew I couldn't block it out anymore. Writing letters was our only way of communicating for a while, and it was awful knowing I would not get the fast response that I usually get from you. I saved all your letters, and I love looking back on them.

I am so proud of you. You are truly one in a million, and you will do amazing things one day. I am honored to be such a big part in your life. Although you're far away, home is always here waiting for you. I miss you to the ends of the Earth, but I have to be okay with that. Thank you for doing everything you do.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
