This year alone, there has been an unbelievable amount of instances in which people have bashed moms for all kinds of things. There was an uproar against a mother who posted pictures of herself scantily clad (read: wearing nicely fitting workout clothes) on her Instagram. And there have been countless instances of women being scolded by strangers for breastfeeding in public places. It all seems, and is, pretty ridiculous, and I can imagine for mothers everywhere it's disheartening. So here's something to remind mothers, and others, how awesome they are.
Firstly, just the fact that you managed to make it to being a mother is really amazing. Nine months (approximately) of growing a human inside of you is no easy feat. And then after all the symptoms and pain you already had to deal with, you managed to get that five-to-ten pound human out of you. And you still call it a bundle of joy.
Then comes raising and dealing with the little bundle of joy. Some of you have had to do it while also keeping one, two, or even three jobs. Some of you have had to do it alone. And some of you found the best way for you to raise your child was to do it from home. No matter how you did it, or are doing it, you manage to make it look easy, even though it's not.
You already have to take care of yourself, so also taking care of one or more children is hard. It's even harder when complete strangers take it upon themselves to try and tell you how to raise your child. But you know, from experience, and trial and error, what's best, and push through. Every day, even after all life throws at you on a daily basis, you continue to be an amazing and gorgeous role model to your children.
Being a mother doesn't just mean raising your child until they seem to be at least somewhat independent. It's at least an 18 year commitment. You have dealt with the first few months, the terrible twos, and the rebellious teen years, and much, much more. You have cleaned up endless messed, calmed many tantrums, and given all sorts of (sometimes weird) advice. Yet you are still able to show unconditional love and wisdom. And sometimes, even when you're child is in college, you'll still get to show it. I have called home over many silly things that for some reason, only a mother knows.
In short, mothers, you are strong, kind, amazing, beautiful, wise, graceful, loved, and just plain awesome. Don't let the angry strangers on the street, the media, or the faceless people online make you ever forget how wonderful you are.
