To Mom, With Love

Or as some people ask, is this your sister?

To Mom,

Words cannot begin to describe how much you mean to me, nor is one day enough to recognize all of the sacrifices you have made for me. You are truly superwoman.

The life you spent creating for your kids has not always been easy, but it has been exactly what we needed. You never failed to provide for us - even when times were tough. You put aside your goals and your life to raise us, to care for us, to drive us and for that no amount of thank you’s can suffice.

You are my favorite role model, my biggest support, my loudest cheerleader, and my best friend. You raised me to live my life with kindness, with compassion and with love. You never gave me limits, instead you told me anything was possible. You taught me that my roots, my gender, my past, nothing can stop me so long as I work hard and believe in myself. You instilled a kind of motivation within me that cannot be learned.

Without you, my life would no longer have the same light and energy as it does now. I would be lost, and there would be no one left to laugh at my jokes. You are the one that has given me every opportunity I have. You are the one that raised me to see the good in people, and you are the one who gave me the gift of seeing this world in such vibrant colors, that I’ve learned there is love and God in everything.

Mom, you are the strongest, funniest, craziest, and most beautiful woman I know. To grow up and become half the woman you are, would be to live a good life. You have inspired me in more ways then I can express and have shown me that I am never alone.

Thank you for being my secret keeper, my rock, my friend, and most of all my mom. As I told you when I was younger, you are my favorite mom and I am so thankful to be your daughter. You deserve a world of happiness, and no one can change that.

So happy Mother’s Day to the best mom I know. I hope you find beauty in this day, the blessings in your life, and the love that everyone has for you. You are my gift from God, and I owe my success to you.

I love you, Mom.

With Love,

Your Daughter.

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.
